Without the book to hand I'm pretty sure this was the issue that introduced keith Williams as background inker.  That said, I have always had the nagging suspicion that he may have inked, at the very least, some of the figures, possibly as a try out, the linework sure did not look like JB.  Either way, another great issue in a classic run.

One of our assignments for the "JB's Monthlies" thread in the fan fiction forum was to re-imagine AF covers with Beta Flight members instead.  I chose this issue's cover and came up with this:

I continue to scratch my head when Mr. Byrne claim this run was his worst work he's done in his career.

When did he say that? I've "heard" him say it was, perhaps, unenjoyable, but I've never seen him say it was the "worst work" he's ever done.

It's interesting to note that this story can't be done today. JB was just barely able to do it in 1984, with a man old enough in the present day to still be alive and kicking in the times of the Old West...

Not much I can say about this that you guys haven't already covered. Yeah, I did intend Elizabeth to be kinda snotty and unlikable. I wanter her to grow on you. Dialog edit of the clumsy kind -- in the scene in the barn with the two baddies and the spectral maiden, the bearded guy in my original script said "This ain't gonna hurt --- much."

Sidebar -- courtesy of watching "Balls of Fury" tonight I have found pretty close to perfect casting for Talisman --

She's of Polish/Irish American and Asian parents, and the Sarcee do tend to have something of an Asian cast to their features. Anyway, that's closer to Native American than all those Italian guys of yore! Calls herself Maggie Q.

One other note about Talisman -- drawing her in black and white, and seeing her in Ye Olde Flat Color, it didn't really occur to me just how much skin she was showing, until I saw a painted version on a French reprint cover. She's practically nekkid!!

Saw her on DIE HARD 4...only reason I'd ever look at that movie again.
