Boy, those old Nick Cardy covers really bring back the memories. Superboy and the Legion #201 is one I remember fondly. The inside art (by Dave Cockrum) was amazing too. I read that thing to pieces.

Eric - I love those covers! They're so dramatic! I especially love the JLA cover!
Outside of Superman and Batman, I had no idea who the other folks were at
the time; it was a cool way to get introduced to other DC heroes.

I'm a little jealous of you guys that can remember exactly what your first comic was. I remember my father buying books for me when I was young, but best I can remember they were late 70's Superman, Flash and Superboy. The ones I remember (mostly by cover) I've tried to track down copies of, but not sure which was first.

My first comic book was one of the following:
Either a Daffy Duck comic with a pink cover that featured Elmer Fudd and showed ice cubes being pumped out of a well
OR
A Gold Key Uncle Scrooge comic with a black cover featuring Scrooge taking an eye exam
OR
Amazing Spider-Man # 171 I believe, featuring an reddish-orange cover with Spider-Man and Nova chained to a giant anchor and being thrown off a boat by the never-to-be-seen-again villain known as Photon.
All of these were probably from around 1978 (that's not when I got them nessecarily, that's just when they were published).
Anyway, I suspect that it may have actually been the two duck comics that I received first, but that Spider-Man issue is burned into my brain. It also put the idea in my 5-year-old mind that Spider-Man and Nova must've been best buds and probably teamed up as often as Superman and Batman.
Wish I could track down images of those duck covers...

Funny this one should come up - I just picked up Essential Avengers #6 this week and it included some of the first comics that I read and some of my favorites - Avengers #129-135 & Giant-Size Avengers #2-4.
And I have to say the Sal Buscema/Joe Staton art looks amazing in black & white!

If this counts, it's probably the Robin Hood and the Batman Book-And-Record Sets. I remember having those before having any actual comic books.
( And was the art on those sets done by Continuity Studios?)

Holy cow! These freakin' Marvel covers make me want to go out and buy those issues right away! They have so much energy! How times have changed.
To Ted Pugliese: I still have that World's Finest, too. Sadly, it hasn't weathered the passage of time very well. It lost the cover and some of the front pages when I was just a lad, so the story essentially begins with Superman and Diana talking to the computer as it runs out of power. For the longest time, I had no idea what the hell book it was. Thanks to this site , I was finally able to track it down. Thankfully, my Captain Thunder issue of Superman fared a little better.
