Gordon and Scott, I also had that POW! Annual.
There's a strong possibility that this 1966 issue of TV21 was my first comic when I was three. My only memory of it is the free gift of a Thunderbirds cap.
About a year later I was getting it every week, possibly starting with this issue:

The first comic I have cognicent memory reading was a Daredevil comic with The Owl in it -- I would have been about 4 years old, so around 1975. Don't know issue number.
edit --
I'm thinking it was THIS issue #116:

Brian posted two of my all time favorites those 100 pg giants of Flash and the Marvel family.
The first comic I ever read is lost too the sands of time...
However the first I bought with my own money is...
Another favorite

The first comic that was mine was this issue of Avengers:
It was the first issue in a subscription my parent's had gotten me. Their rationale for getting their 7 year old an Avengers comic, "There are more superheroes in it then in other comic books."

I started about age 3 with the Dandy and the Beano, but my brother who is eight years older than me was reading stuff like Lion and Valiant (he also read DC's before I was born, so I 'knew' the characters of Superman, Batman, etc., before I actually read them). Then Marvel opened their UK publishing arm with Mighty World of Marvel and that was it-floodgate open. My first US comic was, and I remember buying it very clearly to this day, was Justice League of America #106 (1973) featuring the return of the Red Tornado. (Ah memories).

Brian, Flash 229 was the first issue of that title I ever read (it started my DC subscription). A lot of reprints perhaps, but man, those were the days... 100 pages for 60 cents!

Nanny & the Professor #2 on Dell or Gold Key !
Fun !
After that it was Archie, Richie Rich, Metal Men, the DC Giant 100 pagers (Batman/Manhunter, Flash), Marvel's Greatest Comics #44 (reprint FF #61) and FF #142, Rich Buckler & Joe Sinnott !
Note: good article on Archie Goodwin and Manhunter which mentions "Manhunter" from DC !

Fantastic Four #122
Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer battle Galactus with John Buscema art. What a great introduction to comic books.
