I did some searching for covers and it came back to me. I always mix these up because I think they were issued the same month. It was Spider-man Annual 14 (1980) and Marvel Team-Up 100 (double size issue).

But wha-f**k is going on with Herc's costume here. Good grief.
+++
It's jarring, all right, Chad. But the story is good enough to get past that.
Look for this ish on y'r back bin and you won't be sorry. Thomas did some
heavy-duty homework on mythology and Buscema...well...Buscema IS
mythological!

Edit: I take it that was a continuation of this in some way?
One of my favorite Avenger eras.

Yup, they refer to it.
Wow! Haven't read the original!

Two of the most fun Annuals I read in the 90s:
JB script on 14...is this the only script JB has ever done for Sal the Pal?
Fingeroth writes the second, a Gray Hulk throwback tale with Sal again...just a good slugfest issue.

Gerry Turnbull, those would be my exact picks too! What an era that was back then.

For me I grew up in an era where Annuals were the kiss of death. They mostly sucked, the stories seemed to be throwaways, the art was not as good as the regular title and the only interesting stuff was the neat little information pages. I truly believe the reason annuals disappeared for a while is that a lot of buyers did what I did which was ban them from my pull list.
I had twenty dollars to spend every two weeks and when an Annual came out my heart would sink because it meant I couldn't pick up two or three comics from the rack that I actually wanted.
Annuals have crept back in lately and I have more money to spend but I swear if they start sucking as bad as they did back in the day I'm going to go back to my no Annual policy.

I found this annual all beat up for $10.00 about 20 years ago. What a find. Like finding a hidden treasure. It was a lot of fun. I need to find it out in the collection and read again.

I definitely miss Annuals that were special books I looked forward to with excitement. Wasn't too thrilled that the first Wonder Woman Annual (for the current series) ended up being the last part of the opening storyline months after it originally should have concluded, though.

I'm a huge Hercules fan, and I'd never heard of this Annual. But wha-f**k is going on with Herc's costume here. Good grief. ***********************************
That's pretty bad, but it's better than the one he had with the H-Bra:
Buscema was a great artist, but man, he really should have stuck with the original Kirby design:
.
That's a design that gets across both power and the sense that Hercules is from an earlier time.
