I hated Kittys uniforms after they took her out of the blue and yellow.
The green one was especially bad. Chris Claremont just didn't keep her
how she should be in my opinion.

Not to be too disrespectful, but I always scratched my head at the kudos Claremont got for the way he wrote women & girls in general...
So much of it, in my opinion, was based on trends & the culture of the day that a lot of it is actually quite CRINGE-INDUCING now. For instance, New Mutants 21 features an all-girls "sleep-over" where they daydream about Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenburg & Michael Jackson!!! I know it could be argued that it was merely "wistful storytelling" or even "simpler times", but most people picking that up in the year 2008 are merely going to find it either humorously naff or very very dated...
Whereas JB's portrayal of Sue during that same period in the FF was almost "ageless" & beyond trends but just as real, She-Hulk felt very much like a modern, young woman, & again, just as real, just without the need to spout "goddess" every 5 seconds to prove it or "act kewl" all the time...
Like I say, not meant as an attack on Claremont, who i am a fan of in general, just stating that credit where credit is due. Byrne gives good women! (:

Claremont was one of the writers who wrote noticeably "strong" women in an age where most were secondary to the male leads, and most his kudos stem from that. Unfortunately, as the years went by he had the tendency to write all women exactly the same.
As for topical references, many don't hold up, but I think the occassional topical reference is OK. I don't see why it's a problem for a reader decades later to replace Tom Sellek with Brad Pitt in his mind and simply move on. A far greater error is "relevance" which really kills the timelessness of a story - often embarassingly so. The only topical references that really kill me is the fashion. A lot of the punk fashion in the 80"s JRjr run looks awful.
The teenage Kitty is my favorite as well, but comics are almost doomed to age any teenage characters. As for her costume, when I started buying she had already moved into her recognizable Shadowcat blue costume.
However, costume (and name) design is very hard, and few people know how to do it well. I think the major reason it took so long for Ariel/Sprite/Shadowcat to get a costume is that no one was able to come up with an elegant design.

The concept 'proposal' by Byrne to Claremont is such a
great idea.
It eventually became NEW MUTANTS, but I wish Byrne would
have been the one to write and draw it!
BTW, JB.
I love this ink LINE you used to use back then.
(ie. the gloves)
I spent so much time staring at 'The Art Of John Byrne' book, I have a fondness for that period.

…it seems JB isn't the only one to preffer her as a teen.
••
Now if only a few more would prefer her not to be a Barbie doll.
(When did she start straightening her hair?)

Alan Davis draw the cover to issue 5. His version of her is closer to yours (As we often saw whe he was on Excalibur in the late 80s/early90s)

If I remember correctly the straight haired Kitty started with Paul Smith's run.
I wonder what the current camp of photo-reference happy artists would do if any of them remembered that she was originally supposed to look like a young Sigourney Weaver?

I seem to recall JB mentioning that if he were casting Kitty now, he'd go
with Jennifer Love Hewitt. I'm curious if her being cast as Sigourney's
daughter in a movie was any influence.

I liked Kitty as a kid. I was a bit older than she was supposed to be when
she was first introduced, but I was never put off by a younger teenager
being a member of the X-Men. In fact, I really appreciated the "window on
the X-world" she provided me, as a reader.

Was I the only one whose first comics crush was on Kitty? Not because she was beautiful but because she seemed like a real and good person. One just about my age too.
Who wore tights.
