I've maintained for a long time that Spider-Man doesn't need any kind of reset or reboot, just a creative team willing to tell good stories in the traditional Spider-Man style. That's all it would take.

I agree.
But will it ever happen? We'll see.
And you make a good point about Untold Tales. Truly a gem in the rough. I bought the entire series a while back.

Amazing Fantasy didn't quite work for me.
As JB himself has said, it really doesn't makes sense to tell a story in-between AF # 15 and ASM # 1 which shows how Peter acquired practice at being Spider-Man. Such a period already occurred in-between panels in the origin story, during the weeks (months?) when Spider-Man became a celebrity.
But it's certainly not a bad story. Given a choice, I just prefer Untold Tales.

I didn't have a problem making AF work. I thought Busiek did a great job having the pieces fit together, as he did during UNTOLD TALES.

One thing I found confusing in the "new" Spider-Man scene at the end of OMD -- Peter seemed shy...why...? He's a grown man, he's saved the universe a couple hundred times, he's a total bad-ass as Spidey....I thought they got rid of the shy-Peter long before the wedding......
Did I miss-read the ending ?

Sigh. This is probably the only way I'm going to be finding out what happens in Marvel comics from now on. Frankly, I was at that point three years ago during the whole "Decimation" thing which followed on the heels of "House of M" where things... just didn't matter any more. No amount of "rebooting" is going to bring me back.
Even so, I kind of wince at the thought that Marvel just seems to have degenerated into a sort of "World Wrestling" farce where anything can and usually does happen, including its "heroes" turning into Mengele-esque monsters or making deals with the Devil. To me, the hero part of a Marvel "superhero" should mean that. A hero with human flaws, but a hero nonetheless. Spider-Man, for all the lousy luck he deals with throughout both aspects of his life (as Peter Parker and the webslinging crimefighter), isn't so desperate and immature as to make a deal with Mephisto just to save his ailing aunt, IMO. Unfortunately, the powers that be at Marvel do think that way.
Definitely glad to have moved on...

According to the interview with JQ posted today on Comic Book Resources, it was indeed Gwen who was supposed to return as a result of OMD.
Not sure how I feel about that.
I think maybe I would have preferred it, since it presumably would have definitively wiped "Sins Past" out of existence.

I was struck by the fact that Quesada holds OMD up with DD:Father as his favorite and most personally satisfying story, being highly invested in both...... yet both were very poorly constructed, faced numerous delays, and suffered in quality, with that quality dropping as each issue was released. Both stories also fly in the face of generations-long established characterizations.
