All this House of S stuff will ultimately get re-rebooted in one year. I really really really hope Dan Slott (I respect so much his work) or Mark will do something interesting out of it. (the main issue is to make readers believe that the story would have been impossible to tell pré-OMD)
This shocks me muuuuch less than Spider-Man getting his eye eaten. How could this get printed, anyway ?
(OMD was my first case of download before buying but finally not buying it)

No this isn't the 1970's Peter Parker, it is a guy that I know called Erik that everyone thinks is a completely irresponsible loser with no future who even might have jail time in his near future.

Is Erik also a successful photographer for a large newspaper, a brilliant chemist and saved the world numerous times? If not your comparison fails.

If they were going to graduate Peter from college they should have just
moved him to graduate school (and kept him there). It would showcase
he is bright. Given he would never have time would mean he would
constantly seem to be a screw-up to those around him even though
secretly he was saving everyone. He would be poor, hence the need to
take photos for the Daily Bugle/live with Aunt May without him being a
loser but rather a good guy who is always down on his luck. His dating
life would be in flux since he would be juggling dating with being a
student, a free-lance photographer, a good nephew, all on top of being
Spider-Man. He could be kept in his young 20s (not ideal but he did
graduate high school and college). All the basic
elements would be there.
-edited because I forgot he did go to grad school but they decided to
have him leave.

No. And neither is Peter Parker. Spider-Man saved the world numerous times sure, but the adult Peter Parker can't hold a job. And its Peter Parker that they have a hard time characterizing, not Spider-Man. Its Peter Parker they rebooted, not Spider-Man.

You have to go to the link to see the rest of the pages. It basically shows everything I said. The motorcycle bit is something that Peter Parker did in the 70s. Joe Quesada himself as said that that is the Peter Parker he grew up with compares that against the married version that came in the 80s.

Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Peter Parker is a very successful photographer and a brilliant chemist. His responsibilities as Spider-Man prevent him from being able to use either of these things to their full potential.

My thoughts on that splash page:
I can certainly see the logic in really leaping into the new status quo and showing us a single (and subtly younger, based on the dialogue and art) Peter Parker. Although I am all about showing us characters in action, if the splash had been Spider-Man duking it out with Electro, nothing about that would have been different from what we could have seen months ago.
In my opinion, I think the fans who are upset with the splash page probably are upset with the new status quo in general. I disagree with them that we should see a mopey Parker for a few issues as part of the transition (for one, that won't even work within the narrative of the storyline, in addition to being depressing as hell). I also think that they might be overreacting a little when they say that, based on the splash alone, this is not the Peter Parker they'd want kids emulating. Honestly, it's nothing more objectionable than what I would read in an Archie comic when I was 10 years old.
