Having read much of the dross JMS passed off as Spider-Man stories I can't give much stock to his supposed rules of writing.
And I think I prefer the "It's magic" explanation. Not in a logical sense, but in a forget it and move forward versus trying to explain every little nuance of how it happend over the coming issues.
Of course once the backlash becomes too big they can always say it was Mysterio posing as Mephisto.
Or better yet, Skrull Mysterio.

Bringing Norman back -- how long after the fact? -- was Very Bad Idea. But at least it sprang from internal logic. It is not a stretch to say that the goop that turned him into the Green Goblin could repair cellular damage enough to resurrect him. This is comics, after all.It's stuff like the Spider-Totem and Norman boinking Gwen, which springs from no previous iteration of any of the characters, that to me represents the greater sin. If we start building our stories out of a complete disregard for continuity, we end up in just as bad a place as if we build our stories from a slavish devotion to continuity.

Technically, he's correct that it would make more in-story sense for the
retcons. Still a bad idea, though.

Disturbingly, I agree with Joe Q. JMS' approach would've have turned a lot of
stories into the post-Crisis Legion of Super-Heroes. "It's magic!" is a big
cop-out, but at least it doesn't turn Spider-Man into The Butterfly
Effect starring Peter Parker.

Hey, I'll agree that Joe Q's approach was the lesser of two evils. Still say that JMS's approach would make more in-story sense, though.

Maybe after OMD Spider-Man will be set in the past for a little while to transition readers to the new altered Marvel/Spider-man present. Maybe that's why he appears younger. I dunno.
Heck I'm not even sure I care.

Based on the preview on myspace, the Swing Shift story and Joe Q's comments, this is all present day. Any "younger lookingness" is artistic license I guess.

Or just a decision to go back to a 7-year sliding timeline instead of a 15-year. It's still the present, just means that he's younger without having to explictly retcon it so.
