I agree that it was more a case of bad stories and uninteresting villains.  Egghead, the Human Top, the Black Knight and the Porcupine were the best of the bunch, but there were just to many bad ones.

And the point about the lack of a supporting cast is also true - Bill Foster came around after he returned to the Avengers, and about the only other supporting character was his dog in Marvel Feature [Orkie?]

Pym also didn't have the built-in conflict like Thor [who as a lame doctor loved his nurse, who only had eyes for Thor], Iron Man [with his recurring health issues], Spider-Man [so many problems!], or even Captain America [a man who finds himself 20 years in the future].

My early memories of Hank Pym was his being Yellowjacket.  A very cool costume, compared to the other ones.

I did like his adventures with the West Coast Avengers as Doctor Pym.

I don't remember Hank having a dog though.

AVENGERS #213 - Pym is court-martialed.  He programs a robot to attack during his court-martial, the Wasp discovers his plan and Pym strikes her.  Pym is further humiliated when the Wasp defeats the robot after Pym fails to deactivate it when it attacks the Avengers.  Yellowjacket resigns his membership in the Avengers.

D'ya think that the guys that wrote The Invisibles had this issue in their collections?

I dug up the MARVEL FEATURE issues featuring Ant-Man [#4-10] and Orkie first appeared in issue #4.

The other Ant-Man characters that appeared in that series were Egghead [Elias Starr], Trish "Trixie" Starr, the Wasp [Jan Pym], Whirlwind [Dave Cannon, who appeared as their chauffeur "Charles"], Para-Man,  Dr. Vernon Van Dyne [in a reprint],  Bill Foster, and Doctor Nemesis.

It's to bad this series never made it because I enjoyed it.  Another good Ant-Man read is ANTMAN'S BIG CHRISTMAS by Bob Gale and Phil Winslade.

Aside from reading a couple of the early Avengers stories when I was a wee
lad (circa late 60s), my only exposure to Hank Pym was when he was
Yellowjacket during the Byrne/Perez stories of the late 70s.
After Avengers #200, I didn't pay any attention to the team until JB's run on
West Coast Avengers.

So, for Dr Pym's sake, I'm glad I missed all of those adventures. Seems like
he got the short end of the stick.

(and thanks for the run down, Robert!)
