I was always blown away by how this particular issue defied expectations. Not only in who ultimately ended up on a slab, but how the story itself was constructed. I picked it up at the time expecting a fairly routine "team vs team" confrontation, but John managed to work in plot points and internal conflicts, that added a nice layer of depth to the whole nasty affair. Great confident writing I've always thought.

The art ain't so bad either. ;)

Great issue. I love the coloring in that room Heater's kept in. And props for originality on John's choice for the character who's offed.

I remember driving to the comic store. I remember doing a fast walk to the store door then slowing down as I entered. I tried to be cool but was searching hard for the AF #12 on the shelves. Paid for it and headed straight back to my car. Read the whole thing. After reading I went back in and got my other monthly comics.

Great issue. Sad to see Guardian die. I really enjoyed the character. I honestly had no idea who was going to pass away. This is what I loved. It wasn't spoiled for me. An actual surprise reading  a comic. Art and story were top notch.

i thought the fight sequence was the best to date in any comic.  Read that part over and over.  My big problem with the death was that it was advertised for months beforehand that someone would die this issue.  Therefore, it wasn't really a surprise.

My way to bring back Mac would be to have the Mac that died be a "fake" planted by the bad guys, while the real Mac disarmed his suit but was captured (being defensless) afterwards.  Heather was therefore led to that room, she didn't enter it at random...

I didn't think it would be Guardian until Box went on the attack...

I always blamed Heather for Mac's death.

I am glad to know that my blame was intended by the creator.

It is not a my preferred issue of the series ( it would be the one with Gilded Lily ), but it is a very well written issue, full of great moments, starting with some "casual or routine " do good sequences ( Walter ), then the actions builds up, and finally... err.. the big bang !

And I had guessed the inviso revelation at the first comics issue reading.

My very first back issue purchase at a comic shop. I pretty much knew what happened in it ( heck, I got it due to those many "Editor's Notes" that ran through the books back then) but nothing could have prepared me for HOW it happened. A masterpiece.

And I still absofrigginlutely love how you did the Guardian suit with the fabric ripped off it, JB. I've tried to draw circuits and such like you for 20-some odd years because of this issue. Kudos.
