You're looking at something that is very nearly just a skull.
Color/separations/lousy printing didn't do it any favors, t'is true.

JB the second panel looks like the smoke cloud is forming a face. Are my eyes just playing a trick on me?

Hey, who coined the term Byrne victims? JB? |

A fan suggested it, as detailed in "A Flame About This High" in JBNM #28.

JB, did you get accused of being anti-Canadian for killing off Guardian?

Hey, I got accused of being "anti-Canadian" because of the dialog on the cover of the first
issue! Then, as now, some people live only to be offended.

JB's version (the correct one, obviously) was one of many interpretations of that panel I've had over the years. Nice to finally put this one to rest. Thanks a bunch!

AF #12 is probably one of the most horrifying issues because Guardian's death was not sacrificial like many heroe's deaths are. No greater good comes out of it. It certainly isn't dignified.
Because of the immediate drama involving Heather, I often forget that Guardian's fate is exactly what Jerry Jaxon and Omega Flight intended. The scene above is why they signed up. Although it is said in the series that Delphine Courtney used some sort of hypnosis beam, it is obvious that it only heightens existing feelings - it couldn't work on Bochs - so it doesn't excuse them. What a bunch of despicable monsters. I wonder what their reactions would have been if they were present?
This issue highlights that this could be the fate of any hero who stands against evil. In Guardian's death, we see the fate of what could be any of the characters we read.

Of course, Jaxon died, too, so the scales were balanced somewhat.
And, for some reason, despite being in the room when Jaxon got fried, Bochs seemed to think he was still alive later on...
Hmmm.
One more reason to utterly despise what came after JB's run--Diamond Lil and Wild Child "reformed" and became members of Alpha Flight, while Roger Bochs went insane and died.

Keeping this on topic before I respond to past buds!
To me it looks as though the face is stretched in painful anguish as it is subsumed by the flames. JB's style shines through in the bone structure of the melting skull-face. Very horrifying to read back then AND now! Which is a GOOD thing!
------ Pat Ditton: Nope. No blushy cheeks or glasses. That guy worked in the main store. I worked at the university store.
As far as what happened to Linda & Co. I haven't a clue. The last thing I heard from them was when I received my W-2's. I think someone told me they moved to Lake Tahoe.
I can't recall the girl's name either, but I do recall they didn't agree with her offer as well.
----- Glen O'Brien: One of them was indeed ill, but as with many comic book stores in '97, they went belly up because they were catering to the speculators (dweebs buying 10 copies of DC's Trinity? I remember seeing that myself & not understanding at all).
I remember discussing it with them at one point, but the dollar signs were blinding them. This was why they decided to open up the store near the university. They expected the money to continue pouring in, but the timing was very bad for them, as well as the industry. UGH.
On a personal note, I quit my job at Fitz to work for them in the hopes of learning the business & eventually someday opening up my own comic book store, but for obvious reasons that fell through. I returned to Fitz after that & still work there.
I think Keith & I are the only one's left who you'd remember from your time there. Keith is now working for surveillance & I'm a supervisor for slots.

Oh -- that picture / panel ---- until it was pointed out to me by JB (eyes, mouth, etc) --- I have ALWAYS seen a man falling forwards, collapsing -- the burning flesh of his back, etc. What JB drew as the mouth was the head:
