For me, the X-Men lost their sheen a short while after JB left because
things became more and more convoluted, yet I kept on buying and
reading. Finally, at some point during the Claremont/Silvestri period, I
picked up an issue and thought, "My gosh, I don't remember who some of
these people are, and I can't even sort out what happened last month to
lead me to this issue." I decided I had to let the book--and some of the
satellites--go.
I came back briefly a couple of times--when the adjectiveless title began
and during Onslaught, but I just couldn't stick around.
I have bought Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's The Astonishing X-Men
because it's so disconnected from everything else and feels like an X-Men
book.

Paulo, at least the artists admits his failing. The faces are very indistinct
and without the color version or even with it, I couldn't recognize many
long running characters.
I gave up on the X-titles when the Image boys left. I looked at them now
and then for another couple years but it became quite impenetrable after
not having continued to read it regularly and all interest was lost.

Yeah, I'm not exactly a fan of his work, though I don't think he's terrible. I do think his description of himself is amusing.

I think, basically, any artist will look at his own stuff and say "I suck." It's that drive for self-improvement, the thought that says "I can do this better than I just did..."
As for what happened to the X-Men? They became just another one of Marvel Entertainment's copyright properties. This one says "We're victims. People hate us and fear us, and the whole world wants us dead. We're doomed. Doomeddoomeddoomeddoomeddoomed(repeats ad nauseum)...)
I really couldn't stop myself from getting into the characters until a few years back, when the whole "We're doomed" thing started back up again. I still have a soft spot for the characters as I once identified with them, but what we have now is directed towards a much different audience than you or I.
We're grown up. We've moved on. The kids who're out there buying X-Men comics now have either come in because of all the gossip about the movies or are, just like we were, identifying with the whole misunderstood outcasts angle of it all.

I had a dream that Smitty finished Uncanny X-Men 175 with Maddy Pryor ending up being the real Phoenix and she destroyed the X-Men. End of story. No more X-Men. But then the pages were lost, so J.R.Jr. came in and gave us the ending we have and from there the X-Men fell to pieces.
Nice dream. Nothing that happened after that in the books is better than that ending.

Speaking of Corsair, it should be noted that Dave Cockrum had a originally conceived Corsair to be a different character. It was Claremont's idea to make Corsair related to Cyclops. The whole concept of the Starjammers was created by Cockrum. IIRC, when Cockrum created the Starjammers hr was planning on having them star in their own ongoing series that he was going to write/draw himself. It was either Claremont or an editors idea to have the Starjammers make their first appearance in UNCANNY X-MEN and then to later spend them off into their own ongoing series.

Hmm, I'm sure there are many who consider themselves the bees knees, and have no desire to try to improve. Cockiness is most of the times inversely proportional to talent, IMO <g>.

I think Wolverine is far more annoying. At least with different team books, it's different characters.
Wolverine:
- Astonishing
- New Avengers The one he molests Spider-Woman in
- Wolverine The one he guts people in
- Wolverine:Origins
- Wolverine and Kitty Pryde (upcoming) The one for kids
- X-Force A team of berzerkers with long claws he leads undercover
- All the X-Books
Just kill him already >:(
The problem with trying to tarnish Charles is that nearly all the star characters in X-Men these past few years, Wolverine, Cyke, Emwhore Frost, Mystique etc far outclass Charles in pure assholeness.

Jim Shooter tells the story of being assigned, many years ago, to work
with an artist who was really, really bad. Shooter worried about how he
was going to deal with the guy. He wanted to give him some tips on how
to improve his work, but it was so bad he knew the guy must feel pretty
awful about it, and he didn't really want to make the poor schmuck feel
any worse!
Then he had his first meeting with the artist and, as Shooter describes it,
was subjected to listening to the guy go on and on and on about how
brilliant his art was. He had, it seemed, absolutely no clue as to just how
bad it really was.
(Without getting any better, this same artist went on to become a fan
fave, so what does that tell us?)
