I love Neal Adams's run on X-MEN but I think he made Magneto too "pretty,"
which sort of stuck in the depiction of him. I think the Kirby Magneto is
more brutish. I would imagine that without his mask, the Kirby Magneto
would be hideous.

••

"Hideous" might be a few notches too far, but Kirby's Magneto definitely had
a rougher face, more like a Ben Grimm, boxer's face.

Powerful stuff...I can imagine Magneto's unspoken 'Et tu, Brute?' in the
third-from-last panel!

••

Not unless the guy he's speaking to was a longtime friend and ally.

Kirby's Magneto is sorta what I wish Darth had looked like under the mask.

Darth, like Doom, is a face we should never have seen! Especially since, as
Archie Goodwin noted at the time, he ended up looking like Ray Milland!

SER: Not to hijack this thread but have we ever been given the "backstory" or "origin" of a mysterious character and been satisfied? Darth Vader, Wolverine, and so on... Maybe, just maybe, we're better off with the mystery preserved.

 QUOTE:
Has anyone here read X-men (2nd series) #85?  It has gorgeous Alan Davis artwork and a story by Davis, scripted by Joe Kelly.

Nope.  Haven't read it.  And those last four words mean I never will.  The pages posted here show the issue to be the same ol' same ol' Joe Kelly heavy-handed, "force the situation to get to the conclusion I want," cardboard-characterization claptrap that's also exemplified in the (mysteriously) much-lauded Action Comics #775.

At least it wasn't smothered in his forced "wokka wokka wokka...these are the jokes, folks" so-called humor.

Sad part is, after seeing him and meeting him at San Diego, he seems like a nice enough, cool enough guy.  He just can't write comics well.

What's Joe Kelly up to these days?

Practicing the phrase, "You want fries with that?"

But, seriously...apparently, writing for animation (Ben 10 and Chaotic, as well as an episode of the recent FF cartoon) and *shudder* taught/is teaching a college-level course in writing a graphic novel as of the summer.

Hmm, I didn't read much of Kelly's work outside of that X-Men run but I wonder if that's why I find Ben 10 unwatchable.

Ah, frak.  Looks like he wrote some of the Heroes online comics, too, providing backstory for the Haitian.

If it's in the hardback collection, I guess I know three installments of one of my Christmas presents that I'll be skipping.
