Powerful stuff...I can imagine Magneto's unspoken 'Et tu, Brute?' in the third-from-last panel!

The leap from Holocaust survivor to enslaver of homo sapiens -- it just doesn't work, even with this admirable effort to reclaim the character.

 QUOTE:
You know what's scary, that all the following have been X-Men at this point: White Queen, Juggernaut, Magneto, Sabretooth, Mystique. Claremont made Xavier the king of "Everyone can be redeemed!" with having Rogue join up. Now there's almost as many ex-villains as there are heroes on the team.

I think that's an intentional theme in Chris' work.  Redemption and corruption come up so often that it can't be an accident.

I think I saw a recent comixfan thread asking for questions to be posed to Chris in his forum regarding upcoming EXILES and NEW EXCALIBUR.  Since he has some of the ex-villains on board, I'll try to find that thread and ask him about reforming various characters.

(Regarding replenishing the villain pool, Chris doesn't write the main X-titles, so those villains are under someone else's eye, but there is no shortage of baddies in EXILES and NEW EXCALIBUR.)

Wait - I know I've been out of comics a long time, but...

There's a book called "New Excalibur"??  Is it ... like... the New Mutants for Excalibur?

I accepted Rogue really easily because she had very little exposure before joining up. She was a villain for almost 3 issues (an Avengers anuual, one X-Men issue and a Rom issue.). In the Rom issues she was mostly good. So, her character could go either way easily.

Magneto, Sabretooth, Jaggernaut, Mystique, White Queen were portrayed as villains for entire decades before joining the X-Men. It's impossible to take in.

No, it's actually closer to the OLD Excalibur -- but the PREVIOUS Excalibur (also by Claremont) was almost like the New Mutants for Overseas mutants, with Xaiver (and Magento) trainging the young mutants who were survivors of Genesua <sp> -- so when they relaunced the team with Captain Britan and wot not, it became . . NEW Excalibur -- because New was Quesada's favorite word for a while (Following New X-Men and New Avengers) -- i think we're getting NEW Exiles next.

To be fair, Sabretooth and Mystique remained villains while they were in the
X-Men. Which is probably worse.

I don't like it when titles have the "New" tag. Eventually they become old. (Obviously I'm not talking about things like New Gods.)

I love Neal Adams's run on X-MEN but I think he made Magneto too "pretty," which sort of stuck in the depiction of him. I think the Kirby Magneto is more brutish. I would imagine that without his mask, the Kirby Magneto would be hideous.
