So there were no recorded killings by Magneto until UXM #150. That's
what I
thought.

••

Not on camera, perhaps. But from the start he showed a disregard for
human life -- remember those atomic bombs? -- that leaves very little
"wiggle room", if any. It is far less likely that someone who comported
himself as did Magneto had not killed anyone, than that he had.

Remember, he tried to kill the X-Men many times. (He would
probably have done a lot more on-camera killing, too, if the Comics
Code had been more lenient.)

How often were any Marvel villains actually shown to kill people from the early 60s through the late 70s and early 80s?

Do you have to wait for him to start using them before you take action?
****

A policeman told me as a kid that the somebody would have to start firing shots before they could shoot at him.

Morrison's Magneto had that SilverAge mentality, but he actually racked up the body count.

I found that storyline rather intense, but it painted an interesting portrait of Magneto's villainy.

I couldn't believe it was retconned almost immediately after...

I for one like Magneto as a multi-dimensional villain, but regardless of not having killed anyone in that city, the destruction of a city itself is more than enough cause for military attack.  Can you imagine a government saying, "forget attacking him, he just destroyed a city!  No lives were lost!"

Nothing wrong with a multi-dimensional villain...as long as those dimensions stay true to the character's origins.

I especially liked how Magneto recovered from being a cripple hit with an atom bomb within 2 issues, build a whole fake prison program in China to fake he was a prisoner because HE KNEW ALL ALONG the X-Men would just HAPPEN to rescue him. Then somehow engineered Weapon X out of his old Satelite M or w/e his space station's called, PLANNED ALL ALONG for Jean and Wolverine to be in it so he could HURL THEM RIGHT INTO THE SUN HAHAHA, then have Jean be stabbed to death, sent into the sun, resurect herself AND Wolverine AND rebuild the whole damn shuttle AND being herself back with Logan & Shuttle ALL THE WAY BACK to earth only to suddenly die from 10 000 heart strokes from Magneto like he had become some god damn Street Fighter character or some crap. Cause Jean can recover from being sent into the sun but heart failure and that's it. Bites the dust forever.

And Magneto's explanation was Morrison's one trick pony since Doom Patrol: nanotechnology omg. So all in all, Grant's Magneto was a big load of YES I PLANNED IT ALL ALONG NO MATTER HOW NONSENSICAL HAHAHAHAHAHAH! bullshit.

Magneto was at his best in the Thomas/Adams and Claremont/Byrne arcs.  All subsequent characterization should have taken after those stories.

Tying Magneto to the Holocaust was unnecessary at best and a mistake at worst (I'm leaning towards the latter).

Morrison having Cyclops euthanize somebody was enough for me to steer clear.

Problem is, when most people say this they mean they want characters who are
conflicted, confused, misunderstood. I doubt that anyone would suggest Hitler or
Stalin were anything other than multi-dimensional, yet there is little evidence of conflict
or soul searching from either of them. Legend has it that Hitler was appalled when he
found out about the lampshades made from human skin -- but the Final Solution,
which made the lampshades possible, troubled him not at all.

Magneto can be a complete villain, and still be multi-dimensional. It's just lazy writing
that requires an easier path.

JB has discussed the following before and it's relevant here: when Magneto was recovering from his battle with the X-Men and accidentally brought up a video of his wife at least some ostensible words of tenderness were elicited, and that expressed a subtle but distinct view into his multi-dimensional character -- until, that is, the gist of it was slammed home when he erased her.

JB do you think if Magneto knew Wanda and Pietro were his kids he would have treated them differently?
