I agree, Matt. I find it a little unlikely that many new readers are plunking down 15 to 25 dollars for trades right away.

Something to consider further; many longtime readers have been trained to "wait for the trade", much like television viewers are now being trained to "wait for the DVD".  I'd question even the TBP that collects recent material, such as the first six issues of BOOSTER GOLD, as a sign that comics are increasing in popularity.  As the monthly decreases in popularity and sales, TPB reflect an uptick.  Not necessarily a sign that the overall health of the industry is on the rise.

It's just incredible to me that comic book speculators can even exist today.  Simply unreal.

There's a sucker born every minute...which makes a whole lot of them every decade or two.

that is the fastest growing segment of comics publishing

Logically, trades exist due to monthly comics. But if low monthly sales cause the cancellation of titles, where will the trades come from?

Chicken or the egg situation <g>....

Yeah, if the monthly goes extinct, it's hard to imagine creators creating entire paperbacks.  You'd be lucky to get one from a given team once a year.

Seems like I've spent years now, trying to impress upon some tiny minds
the fact that "waiting for the trade" may mean the monthly doesn't generate
sales high enough to warrant a trade!

Trades would rock more for finite series, you buy one trade and the whole story is over. I can't imagine paying 20 for a short story that's to be continued. My dream for trades would run more along well finite, limited series. I could buy another monthly like CCs X-Men forever cause a month between installments is fun, but trades that lead into one another are a bummer. There's no story that's worth waiting a year's gap between installments.

I expect that one would see more anthologies, with a mix of original and reprinted material,  like those found in the manga section at Borders.  EMPOWERED is a fun little sexy super-heroine series from Dark Horse that is only available in TPB.

Relative to...?  Five years ago or 20.  Big difference.
