Why don't they put the letters on the page anymore?  Kind of takes away from the page when you pick up a new one without any.
Page looks great, nice to see some "old friends".

Why don't they put the letters on the page anymore?

The theory is it makes it easier to do foreign editions. The translators can
create balloons of sizes appropriate to the language, instead of trying to
squeeze the new copy (think of German, which has about 17 words to
every 1 in English) into pre-existing balloon shapes.

Mind you, it's not really as if a huge amount of money is made of foreign
editions. It's a bit tail-wags-dog.

(It's also humbug. When I did TRUE BRIT I was told it was officially the
last book DC would produce with lettering on the pages. What they
actually meant was officially the last book DC would produce with
lettering on the pages unless someone they consider to have clout throws
a hissy fit and insists on real lettering on his project.)

Humbug for a second reason. I work for a publisher that does a lot of foreign editions. We give the foreign countries the book with all of the art in place, and they have to fit the text into a particular area. Considering these are non-fiction books, that means they have to translate technical and scientific terms into these other languages, which is probably worse than translating dialogue.

And fitting the words into the given space, which in some cases is very tight, has never been an issue. I assume if the text is not fitting they just translate it differently.

(Never mind it doesn't seem to have been an issue for the umpity-ump years comics have been translated before . . .)

Would lettering have given anything away?  Just wondering (though I do miss "old school" lettering).
