I liked the Hector Hall version of Dr. Fate.  Even the slightly changed outfit.

Also I enjoy Tim Drake as Robin.  Don't get me wrong, I think Dick Grayson is a great character, but most of the stories I've read have him as Nightwing.  Though I like his history as Robin (to the general public he still is Robin) I can't see him going back to that role.

I loved Barry Allen as the Flash, but have grown to love Wally West.  I think that transition was easier to take then some (Kyle Raynor GL, Ben Reilly Spidey etc) since he was so engrained in the history of the Flash.

I have to agree with JB's sentiment.  This is one of the reasons that I've not been buying as many new comics over the past few years.  I used to spend more than a couple of $100 per month for sometime there but the rising costs of the hobby along with dissatisfaction as to the content of the books has dramatically impacted my spending. Home and hearth have to come first, so why spend so much money on something that I'm not happy with?

To add a couple of wrinkles to the discussion (and hopefully not veer to far of Walter's original point!):

My older sister, who NEVER read comics, used to always complain when she would see me reading comics in this way:

" Why are you reading THAT!? THAT"S not Superman!?" or Batman or Popeye, etc.

It took me years to figure out what she was saying!

This guy for example:
and this guy:

and this guy:

and the Curt Swan era, and the Neal Adams era, and a few others are indeed the real Superman-  not because I grew up with those particular comics, but because they told stories that were true to Superman.

The real Superman hasn't been around for quite a while now.  He pops up every so often but it's only a matter of time before he does something stupid and out of character.  Then, the real Superman fades away again.  This is also true for Batman; Spider-man; the X-men and many others.

Corny as it may sound, I really do miss these guys!  This sentiment is not a product of nostalgia:  It's closer to the feelings that I have towards friends and/or family that have died.  I, indeed, miss the good times that I shared with them- but, even more, I ache for the good times that we would all be having if they were still here!  Judging by statements that I've read here over the years, I'm positive that more than a few you can relate to this.

Maybe what I'm going to say is a heresy for many, but "my" Hulk is that of the TV series.

It was great to see a mild and timid David Banner transform into his more instinctive side and fight everyday injustices.

When I did read comics and found out that Hulk was that unleashed, furious and uncontrollable force of nature and that he could speak like a child or a dumb, well that version of the character was too disturbing for me. Can you imagine a 4 y.o. aggressive and rebel boy with the force of a rhinoceros?

I didn't give a DAMN about Daredevil until Miller started writing him.  While that version remained Matt Murdock, it was definitely a different take, and not the original "version" of Daredevil.  Ditto for alcoholic Tony Stark.  Not the original version, and I can't pretend it is, but I still enjoyed it.

I liked Daredevil pre-Miller.... He was your "Swingin superhero" ....But I still loved what Miller did.

Daredevil was a fun character... Bob Brown who was the artist on the series did a really good job on him before Miller came... Those comics are worth checking out

The Sprit is working for me just fine.

Speaking of Cooke, the whole cast of New Frontiers spoke to me as well.
