I always imagined that JB had drawn material for those panels and just
opted
to not run it as part of the Ass. Ed.'s month, and it was great fun
imagining
what all that missing art looked like!

This issue was plotted and planned specifically for Assistant Editors
Month (one of the more ridiculous stunts forced upon us by Shooter*). I
did do layouts of the action in the panels. Just to be sure it all worked.
* Assistant Editors Month was a crock, in any case. Those issues were not
at all in the hands of the Assistant Editors. Every issue was policed from
On High, just like any other month.

It was amazing to me when I finally figured out that Snowbird's mythology was all JB's doing. I remember flipping through books on mythology or Native Americans as a kid, hoping to see some reference to the gods or the Great Beasts. The story worked so well I just knew there had to be a real myth behind it.
Looking at the post of the first page, I think this is the first time I noticed the pictures of the Mountie and the Queen hanging on the Chief Inspector's wall. Now those are the kind of details that make a Byrne comic a great thing. I have got to finish unpacking from my latest move so I can sit down and re-read this run. It's been too long.

I remember loving this issue...but wanting to hold the comic up to the light and maybe see SOMETHING !

I think I actually thought I had gotten a misprint issue the first time I flipped through this issue. It has not been an issue I tend to go back to often but it really is one of the more original ideas in comics I've ever seen.
In my opinion a "blank" JB comic is still way more interesting than a "complete" book by 99% of the rest of the industry.

I've heard this before, and it blew my mind at the time.
Corporate Creativity: "all you writers and artists- go do something wild
and crazy, just nuts . . . but it has to be in this particular month, and
disrupt whatever ideas you have cooking now, and stop whatever
storyline you're in the middle of, and we'll do it as a promotional event."
This was why I thought that a handful of comics this given month were so
brilliant: they took this pretty lame idea and built around it.
And the longer I'm in publishing the more I see that this wasn't an
issolated incident to this given time and company.

I'm just a little confused on the reading club - is the whole issue presented somewhere else for viewing?

Regarding the issue - at the time, I thought the fight in the snow was really innovative and I even had a chuckle over its execution.But I don't think I would've felt the same way if I had bought that comic as an adult fan.
I have no problem with the cover - the starkness with the color scheme of the AF logo still looks crisp. The box with the AF member heads - If I recall correnctly, only the members who appeared in the story had their headshot in the box. Correct?
And concerning the beast gods. They were downright awesome.I loved those guys. There are some really freaky creatures later on when Talisman's on board.

We're not posting the whole issue, just a handful of pages each week to refresh some memories and hopefully get some folks that never read these before to hunt them down and give them a shot. Also, it's great to get JB's comments wherever possible.

I enjoyed the scene of Guardian flying in through the window, getting a drink and checking the mail. Those kinds of scenes always amused me as a kid because it made me think that that's how real life would be as a super hero. A fantastic element amongst the ordinary.

I heard once the idea of doing the blank pages was to catch up on your schedule, JB, because you had been sick.
No matter what, I thought it was very nice. I can "see" the action.
