Vinny may have something here.  I remember in X-Factor Scott saw a lot of action wearing just the goggles, leaving his hood down.  Chief among these was Cyclops´s solo stand against Master Mold.  First time I thought "maybe this Cyclops guy isn´t a wuss, after all".

"Assuming that the Onion AV Club hasn't misquoted him, it's his line."

Wait. When did The Onion become a trusted source?

Not The Onion, The Onion AV Club, which is the "serious" part of the paper and does interviews with various personalities.

I used to be so very amused by THE ONION until, as with so many newspapers, they touched on something with which I was intimately familiar. Then they got so many of the real details wrong -- and wrong, not just skewed to be funny -- I found I could no longer be amused by them.

Zaki, when you have to put the word serious in quotations like that it
really makes my point for me.

No, it really doesn't.

[non-powered Storm vs. Cyclops fight] ...If they had been in an empty room and she had no means to dodge or block the beams, sure...

***

Out of curiosity-- how does someone without powers dodge light-speed optic blasts which Cyclops aims by looking?  These same blasts were used at a lower power level to tear a Trask Sentinel to pieces.  If the writer played fairly with this idea, Cyclops cannot miss and can blast through almost anything she hides behind.

Yes, Zaki, it really does. Just how serious are we supposed to take a
magazine's "serious" side?

No, Al, it really doesn't.

I put the word "serious" in quotes to distinguish it from its "funny" side.  If it helps, I'll type the same thing again sans quotes, since that's what's gotten you all a-twist:

Not The Onion, The Onion AV Club, which is the serious part of the paper and does interviews with various personalities.

There.  All better.

I agree that Cyclops should not have been beaten by Storm (and wonder if she could have beaten him in a fair fight even when she had her powers), but the above line has gotten me thinking.

If Cyclops looks at something out of the corner of his eye, does the optic blast strike what he is looking at, or what his head is pointed at? Assume he isn't wearing his visor, which may or may not influence the deflection of his blast, does the beam originate in the pupils of his eyes, like Superman's vision powers, or does the beam originate in the eyeball and travel in a straight line away from the plane of his face?

Anyone?

Yes, Zaki, it really does, and did.

Though I'm glad you've finally realized that putting the word serious in
quotations is exactly how to go about ensuring that no-one takes it
seriously.

I'm also glad you feel better about it all now, though.

Of course, I won't even get into how anyone is supposed to take anything
quoted in the Onion AV Club as absolute fact. That might make heads
explode.

Let's just say that I reject the notion of the Onion AV Club being a reputable
source of any information.
