I talked with my LCS owner today, he already ordered copies of FX knowing I'd want the Byrne goodness.

Not that I'm commplaining, mind you, just curious - but how could he do
that? It hasn't been solicited yet.

I remember when I used to look forward to certain "events". Early crossovers (Superman vs. Spider-Man) come to mind but whatever the example, they seemed to actually be eventful back then.
Now, I have the exact opposite reaction. I dread hearing about an "event" or crossover because it generally means absolutely nothing to the characters or even winds up being a good read.
The last thing I drudged my way through was the Elongated Man "event". I don't want to get too specific in case someone hasn't read it but that was almost painful to read. So depressing and dark and out of character for many of the players that I thouroughly disliked it. Now I don't even bother looking at most of the new "events".
Even the Annihilation series, which I distinctly waited for (Nova) was just dark and depressing and the only thing the writers seemed to have as a tool was to kill of known minor-league type characters. I wasn't a particular fan of one of the characters that got killed off but the death was so pointless. Why not write a good story involving a character rather than killing one off just to have a story?

ok, ordered ordered, maybe not. Made a note to order me copies and stock the shelf yes. Apparently someone at IDW is pushing the book since his store and the run his brother runs in Austin has received e-mails about it.

Agreed. I want more of what JB has called "island books."

Or at least the loose continuity of the 60s. Batman meeting Green Arrow is fun. A Batman story spread across every title in the company is aggravating for the reader. Probably more than aggravating for the writers.

"Batman is a mystery wrapped in an enigma! He is cold and calculating, the
most dangerous man on Earth! Most people don't even believe he exists --
they think he is just an urban legend. Oh -- and by the way, he has to cross
over with these fifteen other titles this month, as well as having a dozen
guest stars in each of his own books."

By the way, Wayne -- how is someone who lives in Canada (and a hundred
miles from the nearest comic store, at that) going to be able to ensure
getting FX when it's released?

I agree, and I think part of it has to do with the fact that there seems to be no down time whatsoever between events these days. Not having them but only seen solicitation and the like, Marvel seemed to move from Avengers Dissembled to House of M to whatever the non-mutant aftermath was called to Civil War and ever onwards... And most of these events are so wide it's staggering. Covering just about every single title published by said company, one way or another. Also, the early events seemed focus to somehow maintain the status, the idea that JB often talks about, the illusion of change as opposed to change. Having people killed off en masse and having people act out of character en masse just to be eventful is just plain wrong.
