Just spent Saturday and Sunday in Reading, PA at a small convention sponsored by the Comic Geek Speak Speak Podcast guys and had a blast. Picked up a ton of art and some real gems that I'll be posting over the next week or so. First up is a piece of art by J.K. Woodward that served as a portion of a montage page in some comic called X-Men Origins: The Beast. He does some great work:

INVISO TEXT (Click or highlight to reveal):
I bought this piece from Mouse Guard creator David Peterson and it original featured simply the framing artwork. I asked him to add Fozzie, since Statler and Waldorf tend to heckle him the worst. Peterson hesitated momentarily, saying that he was least comfortable drawing this and another character because he didn't believe he did it justice.... are ya kiddin' me? I love this piece! |

I got lucky. The scan doesn't do it justice. Looking at the detail and various tools and materials used to produce it is mind-blowing. He used pencil on top of paint to give the raised webbing illusion on Spidey's costume.

Fred, that's a great piece. There is a 6 page preview up at various sites of that issue including that page and I really like how Juggernaut looks.

Great page, Fred. I actually thought about going to Reading for that show. Looks like I should have!
Also, really looking forward to the upcoming Roger Stern/Lee Weeks issues of Amazing Spider-Man.

Man, I LOVE those GI Joe pieces! I recall those characters from my childhood (including Warpath, the Native American Hawkeye knockoff). Those pieces have a real Frenz/Buscema quality to them, IMO.

Hey Fred -- love that page from Lee, as I mentioned on CAF when the preview came out friends of mine were sure I'd be shooting for that page. But I'm holding out for a page with Juggernaut up on his feet :)

I just received my commission from Steve Rude. I saw the Gwen Stacy he had for sale in his CAF which featured her drinking a Coke. I have always loved the 40's Coke-a-Cola art and thought Steve could do a nice Coke commission, he wasn't doing watercolour ones so I went for an inked piece. Steve really did a great job, its looks like a classic ad and the only indication it's Jean Grey is the floating coke bottle being opened (and the sound effect was perfect). Check it out:
