The Harlan Ellison and Steacy sigs. are pretty funny, I'd love to hear more about the circumstances. *** William, this was a autograph signing during San Diego Comic-Con 1987 for Ken & Harlan's graphic novel collaboration, Night of the Fight. Harlan was pretty cordial and signed my sketchbook, then passed it to Ken... Who immediately signed on the sketchbook page opposite of Harlan's (before I could stop him, since on the other side of the page he was signing had a sketch from an artist friend of mine). Harlan noticed that Ken had signed his name in a much bigger size than his, and became mock indignant. He then called Ken an S.O.B. and grabbed the sketchbook back to draw his little caricature of the Night of the Fight character and "personal message" to Ken. Ken then grabbed the book again and wrote his "heartfelt wishes" back at Harlan. The crowd of fans around their table were howling by this point, but I was in a state of shock during all this. When I finally got my book back, I thanked them both for the autographs, but I also showed them what they did to the sketch on the other side of the page. The laughter pretty much died. I bid my adieu and as I was walking away in a bit daze, the two restarted their loud bickering (saving face I suppose). An interesting postscript to this happened the next day when I asked Chris Claremont for his autograph (who apparently had witnessed the previous days spectacle). Chris thumbed through my sketchbook and stopped at the Harlan & Ken autographs. He also noted the pages that had extensive marker burn-through, on which I had scribbled the note "Warning: Ellison - Steacy Radiation Fallout". Looking a bit peeved, he put aside the Sharpie he was going to sign with, and pulled out a nice looking fountain pen to do this: He handed back my book and told me to enjoy the rest of the con. Quite the memorable first SDCC to be sure! EDIT - Ack! It's Night and the Enemy not Night of the Fight ! Double Ack!
