Joe,
I'm not really sure what Rude uses on these sketches. He does use different tools though. here is another piece he did for me, which clearly(to me anyway) wasn't done with the same implement

Dave, the Garcia-Lopez Deadman is very cool.
I don't think Steve Rude could ever do a bad illo. Give him a dull crayon and I'm sure it will still be great.
