One of the points that I hope does not get lost in this, is that if someone sees a commission here that they love, but for whatever the reason they can't get it, consider commissioning something yourself.  True that won't bring you any closer to the piece you want, but it will, certainly in these here parts, guarantee you a fine piece of art....that will one day make its way to me :)

Ari, if someone seeks me out and wants to buy a piece from me, I know there is now a market for my piece. It doesn't matter who the character. I now own something that is one of a kind that someone else wants. For me to give that up I feel I should be well compensated. I'll no longer own it and see the value of the piece increase with time. Never is a mighty long time Ari. One of a kind art will increase in value. Maybe not if you try to flip it a few months after buying it, but in time it will.

But in how much time Paul?  A year?  2 years?  Commissions do not  hold value nearly as well as published art.  That's a fact.  I agree that if someone makes contact with you, if someone seeks you out, that they should expect to pay at least as much as you did for it.  the fact they took the time to locate you suggests that they want it badly enough to do so.  BUT, if someone puts up a commission piece on eBay because HE decides to sell, he should NOT expect to make back the commission price.

Gerry,

There are some artists who are an exception.  In Hughes case, that may have a lot to do with the fact that he no longer accepts commission requests.  If JB stopped doing these, all bets are off

Adam Hughes could draw an Aunt May and have it triple in value within a year. I'm still trying to get a piece from that guy. I've been shut-out at least a dozen tries at various cons.

But that's the point.  Because he doesn't do them, and you can't get one, you will pay more.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; that is never truer than with art. I have paid over the odds for something I could not do without but as a matter of routine I would not expect in the current climate to pay over the odds for any commission. It is all about supply and demand and while JB still does commissions there is ample opportunity for anyone to get their own piece of comic art gold. Everyone is different, and if like Ari they have to have a certain commission, all the better for the owner, but recent history shows this is not the norm.

Let the commissions long continue.

Now, Ari, repeat after me, "I will never EVER utter those words again."
I mean, I still have a dream to one day, when I've got more space and more money, actually play the comission game... so until then JB cannot stop. Or die. Those be the rules. ;)

I'd have to side with Gerry and Paul on this one.
