One who owned one would think he'd get more out of you Ari than one would by putting it on ebay...

Then one would be wrong Michael. A few people have tried jacking up prices on some pieces I expressed interest in, and needless to say, they still have the pieces in their possession. I follow what art sells for pretty closely on eBay and CAF, so I know what a piece should run me. Only on rare occasions, like this one, have I actively sought out a commission.

Good on you then..yes there are unscrupulous people out there, but it makes no sense for someone to try to jack out their price when JB is definitely in your price range for commissions.

Michael, to put it in perspective, someone had a piece they knew I wanted, and wanted me to pay a lot more than the price to commission. My answer to someone like that? I will just commission the piece myself. On the two occasions(this and the Batman on a gargoyle in Gotham), that I really REALLY wanted a piece, the people have been gracious and NOT tried taking advantage.

thers nothing wrong with someone wanting the best price for their art tho is there? i was interested in a piece, which market value at the time was price X.Owner of the piece declined to sell for what was market value, and ended up selling at quite a higher price.Good for the seller, not so good for me.

Art is unique. If you want something and someone wants to up the asking price I don't see how that's "taking advantage." You can take their offer or leave it. If you pay their price it was worth it to you. If you don't, it wasn't. There is no "taking advantage" either way.

Call it capitalizing on the situation then, but in either event, I won't pay for for a commission piece than the actual commission price. Why should I when John can whip up another

i agree with joe on this, art can have a greater value, than just the price the artist charges

Absolutely Gerry. I don't disagree with that, but if the artist is still available, as John is, to draw me something VERY similar, I'd be reluctant to pay more than the commission price.

Again....because each piece is unique. A particular affinity for a particular piece means it should or at least could be worth more than what an artist charges.

Worth is a difficult word to invoke when discussing art. I try not to let my emotions get the best of me when making art purchases. Since I can be assured a GREAT piece by John, why would I pay more(except is a VERY limited circumstance)?

i think the notion of having the artist just redraw a similar pose is kinda like a conveyor belt idea.whoops, here comes another one.
