Brian - as far as I can tell, he made it up entirely on his own. I asked for a 11 x 17 b&w illustration in his own style that would have been suitable for the cover of a 1940s Startling Stories of Planet Stories pulp mag. (Astounding had the best stories of the era, but Startling and Planet had the coolest covers, I think).
I wonder what John Byrne could come up with using that kind of request....

Great Hembeck piece, Brian. I'm so looking forward to reading his stuff in the upcoming collection. And that's one sale that he can but entirely down to the good promotion he's got from all the lovely commissions et al seen in here.
