I think Stan renamed Atlas Marvel because of Timely's Marvel Comics No. 1 which first featured the original Human Torch & the Sub-Mariner.

Duh.  How could I forget that?

The Captain Thunder episode from 1974 was published here. It was one of my favourite Superman books, when I started to buy older issues. We also had a Shazam! book at about the same time but the drawing on the cover looked very lame so I didn't buy it. I last a year or two I believe, not a hit. If someone can show a picture of teh Marvel family and explain litte maybe I will be happy. I have seen a girl and an older man with the Marvel suit withouth super powers and the others say "come on let's fly" and humor him.

The older man is Uncle Marvel and has no powers. The girl is Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel's sister. There is also Captain Marvel Jr, the Lts. Marvel and Hoppy the Marvel Bunny.

From left to right: Captain Marvel; Lt. "Fat" Marvel; Captain Marvel jr; Lt. "Tall" Marvel; Lt. "Hillbilly" Marvel; and Mary Marvel. Uncle Marvel can be seen seated at the piano in the background.

I've seen in the net that DC published "Shazam Archives vols. 1-3" reissueing comics from the Golden Age.

Do you know if they are worthwhile?

I have them, they stray toward silly stories but if your in the right mood they make a good read.

Thanks Michael.

Is there the first issue of the character? And which volume would you recommend if I only purchase one?

Vol.1 contains Whiz Comics #1 (Captain Marvel's 1st appearance) but there isn't much continuity in the old stuff so you can jump on at any point.

Volume 2 has the first issue of Captain Marvel Adventures by Simon and Kirby. There are, I believe, four volumes of the Shazam! Archives and one of Shazam Family, which features Captain Marvel, Jr--beautiful work.

 QUOTE:
Uncas?

The real Uncas was the chief of the Mohegan tribe. Note that James Fenimore Cooper named the son of Chingachgook after Uncas in his novel The Last of the Mohicans. If you've seen one of the film versions of this story (I recommend the 1936 original and the 1992 remake), you'll understand the significance of the character and name.

And this image made me think of something less than menacing.

The four Shazam! Archives and The Shazam! Family Archives are most worthwhile! I love them. Along with The Spirit Archives, they are among my favorite books in my collection.
