COMIC URBAN LEGEND: DC almost had a black Captain Marvel.

STATUS: True

After Shazam! ended, newly arrived at DC writer/editor, Roy Thomas had a number of proposals for a revamp of the character in the very early 1980s.

Along with artist Don Newton, Thomas came up with one proposal that suggested that, since they could not call Captain Marvel Captain Marvel, they rename him Captain Thunder (just like Maggin’s issue of Superman). Thomas presumably felt that it only made sense to return to the original name, if Captain Marvel was unavailable.

The twist, though, was that Thomas thought that the character should be black! Yep, an African-American Billy Batson and Captain Marvel!!

I would've loved to have seen that series come to fruition! I remember when I
first saw that art on the front page of CBG...I thought it was pretty cool!

There again I think, if they wanted to have a black Captain Marvel (or Thunder) it should have been a new character granted the powers by the Wizard, not an altered Billy Batson.

Really wouldn't have bothered me if it had been an altered Billy Batson who
became Captain Thunder; after all, at the time, the original Marvel Family
were on Earth-S.

Kind of odd they didn't bring back "Whiz Comics" for CM the way "Action Comics" hosts Superman.

I've often thought the same thing.

How long has "taking a whiz" been a slang term for urinating? Maybe that had something to do with not bringing it back.

DC could've given them Adventure Comics.

If its a new take on the character why would it matter if he's black or white. If the Earth-2 Hawkman can be a reincarnated Egyptian and the Earth-1 Hawkman an alien why cant the Earth-S Billy Batson be white and the Earth-1 be black?

That Don Newton art (inked by Jerry Ordway, I think) is the best!

A Black character with the powers of Captain Marvel. Now there would
be a good use of the name Black Lightning!

Captain Marvel remains the DC (by acquisition, anyway) character I really
want to see you work on, JB.
