I hope this isn't so commonly known that it's a bore but I was wondering why they changed Captain Marvel's name from Captain Thunder? I suppose it would only be in hindsight since Marvel was Timely (or something else) way back then but that would have saved a lot of the fuss of DC not being allowed to use Captain Marvel's name.

The name "Captain Thunder" was already in use, so Fawcett couldn't use it. It may have been a movie title. Ironic?

I'm glad they didn't keep that name, "Captain Marvel" sounds better, and DC can use the name for the character they just can't name the book after him. Kind of odd they didn't bring back "Whiz Comics" for CM the way "Action Comics" hosts Superman.
*Edited to add: If DC had revived the Whiz Comics title for Captain Marvel, maybe so many folks wouldn't think that the character of Captain Marvel is named "Shazam".

I don't know, I'm certainly more used to Captain Marvel but Captain Thunder could easily grow on me. I mean, if criminals heard the sound of thunder they would know they were in trouble. Plus, whenever there were natural thunderstorms, there wouldn't be any crime would there? I mean, the criminals would be walking around like nervous cats wouldn't they?

Well, you learn something new every day! I had no idea he used to be called Captain Thunder.
I'm pretty sure it was only for the ashcan, so technically he was pitched as Captain Thunder, not known that way.

I had no idea he used to be called Captain Thunder.••• Maybe you didn't know this, then, either: The owner of Fawcett Comics was Captain William Fawcett, publisher of the famous (infamous?) CAPTAIN BILLY'S WHIZ-BANG, a pulp magazine for boys. It was because of this that Captain Marvel was a Captain, that his secret identity was named Billy, and that he first appeared in WHIZ COMICS.

And thanks to DC's test run for Captain Marvel's return, there was a Captain Thunder living on some Earth in the pre-crisis DC Multiverse.

JB, didn't Roy Thomas back in the 70's before DC brought back the Capt. Marvel comics pitched an idea for Captain Marvel to be African American and i heard that they were gonna call him Captain Thunder? any truth to that rumor?

No, I didn't know that, Sir. Thank you for the information.
Perhaps I should seek out some books on Fawcett Comics or a book about Captain Marvel. I do like the character and hope they do justice to him in the forthcoming Shazam movie.
