I always thought Storm's costume was more like patent leather to get those brilliant white reflections of light.

JB, I'll almost always defer to you in any comic-related topic, but I refuse to believe Cyclops' uniform is black in any incarnation except the original version!

Kirby, inked by Ditko.

Thanks for posting that Machine Man #14. That is just too damn clean. No clash of styles whatsoever in my opinion and I actually really like it. I'll have to see if I can track that issue down.

Yeah, Cyclops's costume is OBVIOUSLY blue, as demonstrated by most of the artist that have drawn his adventures over the decades...
Kirby, Adams, Cockrum, Byrne, Smith, Romita Jr, Silvestri, Leonardi, Lee.... What do these guys know, anyway?
And a B&W version to show what the poor artists see before coloring:

Oh, and Jim Lee's version may seem more blue, but compare him with the BLUE Beast and you'll see my point.

I think Greg's posting of the X-Factor costume is more of the turning point for everyone to assume Cyclops' costume was blue. Personally, I always thought it was black up until then. It was that Layton/Guice/Frenz (I don't know who designed it) era of X-Factor that turned Cyclops from black to blue. But even since then Cyclops has moved back into black. Right now in the current Astonishing X-Men he is in black.

Black Goliath and Black Lightning, though are in blue.••• You're half right. Black Lightning's costume is blue with black trim (otherwise it would be black on black). The "Black" in his name refers to his race. Same for Black Goliath, as far as the name. But as for the costume, I happen to be the guy who designed it! It's black.

The problem is a lot of times there is no difference at all between something that is obviously supposed to be blue (Captain America for example) and something that is obviously supposed to be black. I understand in the "old days" they had to use certain colors for simplicity or whatever but nowadays I think they should try to use grays as the default "highlight" color rather than blue (if the costume is intended to be black, that is).
Nothing in the Black Goliath costumes I can find images of online look black to me at all. I'm not saying it isn't SUPPOSED to be black, I'm just saying they don't seem to do a good job representing that fact.

I never knew you designed the Black Goliath costume, JB. Was this the first costume design you did for Marvel?
