John, I think Claremont has suggested that Mystique was born male but chooses to live life in a female body most of the time. What a nice can of worms that is.

No, Claremont clearly said she was born female. But this alternate version choose to live as a man most of her life.

The main universe version to which we are more used did that at least in the 30s (as seen in the "true friends" page posted earlier), and probably most of the early XXth century.
