And a comment now about Northstar's homosexuality. I remember as a kid reading an XMEN ALPHA FLIGHT special miniseries. Rogue absorbed Northstar's memories and powers and was suddenly very 'schocked' by his secrets. I never knew if this 'shocking' secret was supposed to be the fact that Jean Paul was working with Francophone seperatists  or that he was gay. As if being gay was supposed to be shocking?

As if being gay was supposed to be shocking?

Probably would be to a somewhat sheltered teenager from rural Georgia, as Rogue was, I believe

Well Rachel made it clear in the beginning that Coagula aka Kate Godwin was a trans woman.

Every issue is the first issue for someone. How as this "made clear" after "the beginning"?

Whether or not someone being Gay is "shocking" depends on a number of things. Who that person is, for instance. And who it is who is being shocked. As I recall, Rogue is from the Deep South. Attitudes are different there. She could easily be shocked to discover a seemingly studly guy like Northstar is Gay.

And still, the issue in question was published in 1985. Back then, such a revelation was still considered "shocking" by the mainstream. Remember Rock Hudson?

**********

I remember! and boy was I shocked!  I also remember my Great-Grandma Ruby telling me that Hudson was gay back in the late 70's and not believing it!  I thought no way!  But she was right.  Of course I was only about 11 or 12 then and didn't really know too much about anything like that.

Well, I'm not trying to say that it _should_ have been a big deal, just that it was to a lot of people.

Of course, his having AIDS played an even bigger role in that.

An american screenwriter I met told me Burt Lancaster was bisexual. I still can't bring myself to believe that one.

Well that was a while ago now and I'm more worldly now.  I like to think so anyway.  It was a big deal then, more a surprise I suppose than big deal.
Liberace wasn't a surprise I must say.  I'm not surprised that people would hide it, it can kill your career.  Seems to me everyone knew about Liberace, but it was a "Don't ask, don't tell" era.  Like a lot of things these days with the internet, you CAN know too much!
