When I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis a few years ago, I was put on steroids to help calm the inflammation, but it also created a ravenous appetite that wouldn't go away.  Now matter how good I tried to eat, I packed on 30 pounds that I still can't seem to get rid of.

A diet sounds like a good idea right now.

count me as one of those, 'need to gain' people.

last August I was my usual 5'9 152lbs.

I decided to do something about it, as my Doc said my asthma would probly go away, and my allergies wouldn't murder me, and so mush other stuff, IF I was at a target 166lbs.

I thought he was nuts, but went for it.

I bought every Men's Health and Men's Fitness for the year, searched the best way to gain, and voila~I have been a steady 166-168 lbs for 2 months now.

Hard work.  5 days at the gym per week.  Eating 5 meals a day plus protien shakes.  Gym trainer did the math, and said with my activity level (Daycare musician, Restaurant/Bar manager, Bar Musician, etc.) I need about 3200 calories a day to STAY at 166.

Do you know how tough that is?  Gotta be good calories, too, or else I'll turn to lard fast.

Roasted Chicken
Ground Turkey
Ground Pork
Steaks
Ground Beef
Pasta
Any green vegetables

My shakes are 6 oz nonfat milk  with oats, flax seed, fish oil, algae, whey protien,  peanut butter, frozen blueberries, 2 shots of espresso, and wheat germ.

3 a day, breakfast, lunch, after dinner dessert.

My asthma DID pretty much go away!  My allergies to cats IS better.

Geez, 20 lbs in a month just by altering portion sizes. Assuming most of that amount is fat tissue loss, 5 lbs per week means a deficit of 17,500 calories each week (1 pound of fat is approximately 3500 calories).  That means if eating only 1800 calories per day, JB is expending (burning) 4300 calories per day!  Running marathons, JB?

Bad assumption yo - if there's no weight lifting hes dropping muscle weight. Slows the metabolism.

This summer I signed up for one of those Cardio Bootcamp programs, where
I got up every morning at 5am to run around and lift weights and use an
exercise ball for a month. I did not lose one inch anywhere but gained three
inches on my bicep. I don't eat junk food (can't really get it over here) and
have a small calorie intake. I don't seem to lose anything. Breakfast - a glass
of Yoghurt (it comes in liquid form over here). Lunch - Chinese cafeteria
food which I just pick at. Dinner - usually baked chicken or Chinese food,
which is not fattening like the western style. Again, no junk food, no fast
food restaurants, and I exercise. I could eat more fruits and veggies but have
at least two pieces a day. I am usually never hungry. I still am huge.

20 lbs a month just by lowering portions sizes. mumblemumblemumble.
Life ain't fair.

Not yet. The first few weeks of a diet are always the most productive, with or without exercise, as the body sheds the truly excess poundage, mostly water stored in the fat cells. Then it begins to slow down or even "plateau". I'm now down to around 3 pounds a week, average loss, and have had to add excercise (walking) to make sure the loss rate does not diminish more or even stop.

I still hope to hit my target weight by American Thanksgiving, at the end of November --- just have to work a little harder now to get there.

Okay, I am getting motivated again. Just have to try small portions all day, more fruits and veggies, and walking in the evenings. Hell, if JB can do it, why can't I?

"Perfect timing."  The one day of the year where eating to excess is the national holiday.

Seriously, I hope you reach that goal.  I hit my goal 5 years ago at the exact same time.  It was extremely tough maintaining through the holidays, but if you're strong-willed, it's very doable.

Because of Rosh HaShannah last week, I lost three pounds!

Ate a huge meal right after synagogue both days (mostly veggies and some
salmon; no meat, few carbs), then no other food after 3:00pm.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with Yom Kippur this week.

I'm the right weight, just the wrong height.  I need to be about 6'10".

 QUOTE:

You have a point, but if JB has never weight lifted, it's not the cause of muscle loss now.  In this case it would be cellular protein breakdown (resulting in weight loss) because his proportional protein intake is less along with all other food components.  If it were due to a lack of weight lifting, then the vast majority of Americans who don't weight lift would be losing muscle weight all the time.  Of the 20 lbs lost, a good bit is water (which makes up a significant portion of muscle composition) but likely very little cellular protein loss.
