And then there would be the bloodshed when it came to the divying up of the pages. +++

It works for 12 also. Two options : - Or each member choose wich page he wants, and you only start when all 12 pages have a buyer. - Or you get 12 buyers, and gets a lottery at the end choosing who gets what. Use an innocent hand, such as Jim's kid.
In both case, each buyer is aware of what he does and the rules BEFORE. So no complain. Anyway, chances are that buyers buy more than one page. You'd just need to add something fair : if one of the buyer is someday to sell his page, he has to sell it to other buyers first. That way buying this, you get two things : a page, and a chance to get another some day.
Just my two cents. And i already got the cover. ; )
Can someone post the original six pages to refresh my mind, please ? I've got my reprint in some other place.

Would this be Batman in his original costume like the cover? Personally, I would rather to see Batman in a more updated outfit.
I'd love own part of a commissioned comic. An Invaders/JSA story would have been so good.

It's a redo of the FIRST adventure we're talking about here. Only for Golden age and John Byrne fans.
John, the thing that i am worry about is not to find 10-12 members, is about what will D.C. says if you do it that way. I mean, doing it in six pages just like the original, it's a tribute, an homage. Doing in more, well, it's a story, or a comics. They migth be upset ?
Anyway, it's your decision, you say yes or no, i'm not here to "force" you to do it, of course. I must add that the price you said is a very good one, it show your interest to this project.
****
I have two questions regarding this commission : - Why did you choose not to add the text on the left ("Starring (...) the Batman") ? For visual interrest ? - Do you remember (even as kid, for practice, ...) ever drawing this cover in your life ? Thank-you

Just as a neutral observer, the "best" way to split the 12 pages (if you get 12
people to chip in a 1g each) is to draw who gets what original page out of a
hat - Matthew doing it is a good idea - and then give all 12 folks nice prints
of the other pages so they'd each have one original page and prints of the
remainder. And there would be an agreement to offer any pages sold to the
original group of 12.
But, honestly, I'd be surprised to see this done. Somebody would bound to
be pissed off by his/her page. And then the inevitable killings would start
and it would all fall apart..........

In fact, it's more easy than you think. Because, let's supose that John did made his choice, so he open a topic (just like the Othelo : who is interrested). Now, each people entering in know the rules and that he migth not have the splash page. In fact, the risk is the same than when you order a commission : you're not sure of the result, until you see that the result is far better than what you thougth (you should see me before EACH of my commission : "what if it's not good !!?"). ; )
So : A), we get 10 peoples, having $ 1000 and knowing only one will get the splash page (and you'll get them), John start, B) we don't get ten peoples, we forgot this idea.
Having a print, or a high quality scan, only for the 10 + the guy who get the cover is a very good idea.
The only thing is that making it in 6 pages will get more customers : a fan would rather get 1/6 than 1/10, 1/12. And don't forget some migth request two pages. Two pages is a third. Three is half.

No need necessarily for a splash page.

Now, let's talk seriously about why this wouldn't work. (And it's basically the same reason these mad schemes have fallen apart in the past.)First, I would want to stay true to the original script, since it would have been written as a script, and not "Marvel Style" of plot-pencils-script. So, same number of panels, total. But broken down more "modern style", with five or six panels per page, like I did on FANTASTIC FOUR, rather than eight or nine. That's how it grows from 6 pages to 10. More with fewer panels, which would certainly be the case with modern storytelling. But let's look at those pages, based on a six panel count, just to make it easy. Page One: No Bat-Man, unless I did a knockoff of the "logo". Page Two: No Bat-Man. Page Three: Bat-Man in last panel. Page Four: Bat-Man in action. Page Five: Bat-Man in first panel behind wheel of car Page Six: Bat-Man in action Page Seven: Bat-Man in action Page Eight: Bat-Man speechifying, small action Page Nine: No Bat-Man Page Ten: Full page splash "reveal" of Bat-Man. So, hands up who wants to pay a grand each for pages 1, 2, 3, 5 and 9?
