My favorite Tarzan movie stars Gordon Scott:

He's obviously a body-builder, but not like the Jusko model I posted. Yet I can see Jusko's justification for the Tarzan built the way it is, considering that Tarzan has, in my mind, a denser mass than most men by virtue of his "superhuman" qualities...the idea that NO man could do, or be, what Tarzan becomes.

Thus, the idea is that Tarzan is "more than human"...Phillip Jose Farmer pretty much indicates Tarzan and Doc Savage and Wolf Larsen and so on are, well, mutants. I'll somewhat defend Jusko's Tarzan, only on the grounds that Tarzan's kind of "supposed to be" stronger than your normal hero-guy. Musculature is an "easy" shorthand for that, I guess. And you can justify it somewhat in the genetics of the "superhero" Pulp adventurers like Tarzan, the Shadow, and Doc Savage, who are all "more than human."

Of course, a lot of this is retro-theory or whatever, but I pretty much subscribe to it.

I'd like to see Gordon Scott beat Johnny Weismuller in a
swim meet ;-) I think that's the point, overdeveloped
muscles are not the result of superior physical ability
only bobdybuilding and steroids.

The interesting thing though is that someone who was way
ahead of the body building craze and development was Bruce
Lee.

I saw a show on him on the history channel just a few
weeks ago an it talked about how body builders are amazed
by the development of Bruce Lee's body and how he did
things training that people didn't figure out in body
building until years later. Lee made protein drinks with
raw meat and all kind of vitamins that were difficult to
locate in his day.

They said he had a "christams tree", which is some
formation of muscles you only see in the most hardcore
body builders and not until years after Lee. And some of
his musculature was incredibly developed. Now, Lee's body
obviously wasn't hugely developed all over.. but this may
not be by choice but because he didn't have the bulk and
genetics to achieve that.

Although in a show I saw, I can't recall who, but they
criticized Lee for concentrating too much on developing his
physique for it's looks instead of for skill in the martial
arts. Basically calling him an over-hyped bodybuilder.

Gotta say that if anyone has nailed what Tarzan's physique ought to look like it was Disney.  Lean body mass, well developed shoulders, forearms and calves.  That's what a guy that's spent his life swinging from tress and eating bugs and tree bark should look like.
