The G.I. Joe file cards were different here in Canada -- had to appease
French Canada.....
I think the english portions were smaller so we got edited versions...

Man, I used to love collecting G.I.Joe's. My first one ever was Flash. I remember all of my buddies, when I came home from summer vacation with my grandparents, had "found" He-Man and didn't know what G.I. Joe was. I converted them and they all quickly had much better collections than me.
I remember I got the snow-mobile for my snow guy(can't remember his name now but he had an orange beard) and thinking I was gonna be the cock of the walk. I was so excited to show them this great vehicle I had begged and cajoled my dad to buy me for my birthday(I think I was 12 so I was much too old for that stuff<sarcasm>). I come struttin' into our usual get-together and they've got the tank, the jet, the helicopter all the figures, etc. Another lesson in parents who encourage a child's interests vs. those who don't.
I still remember the episode while the others have probably long forgotten. Anyone got a tissue? My snowmobile was still better dammit and none of them ever got one, so nyah!

My Star Wars collection didn't get much bigger once I discovered the Joes. They are still my all-time favorite line of toys. Perfect size, perfect articulation, really good attention to detail (having Larry Hama work on the file cards was genius), awesome vehicles...The first 4 or 5 years are unreal.
And yeah, I was one of the guys with most of the early stuff, too. Getting the first headquarters for Christmas was one of the best moments of my early life. And you're thinking of Snow Job and the Battle Bear.

G.I. Joe my favorite toy ever! While I don't remember my first figure I remeber Stalker being my first swivel arm figure. In fact, I remeber going to school and talking about the new figures I had just gotten with my friends and mentioned that my Stalker could hold his gun with two hands. Nobody believed me, so after school all my friends came over to my house and were AMAZED! It was the coolest thing ever.

Can't remember if my first Joe was Snake-Eyes or Short-Fuse. Either way, much like Ryan, I didn't purchase another Star Wars toy from that moment on (with the exception of the Y-Wing fighter. I figured it would make a real cool snow vehicle for the Joes...with Gung-Ho riding shotgun in the droid-hole). Can't remember how long I kept collecting...I seem to remember the USS Flagg being the last big playset I really wanted.
For a kid that grew up with a pool, this was the best toy ever:
