After a brief skirmish with Customs, Fireball XL5 arrived today.

The model is 41 inches in length.

On a temporary base, until I can rig up something more appropriate.

Nice!  What's that ship from, JB?  And did customs think it was live ammo for a moment?

It's from the eponymously yclept FIREBALL XL5, Matt, a Gerry Anderson
"Supermarionation" series from the 1960s. A favorite show when I was a
kid, and one of my top five or so favorite spaceship designs.

Neat.  I know of Gerry Anderson, but never really have seen much of his work outside of clips.

To the creation, is this a ship the model maker regularly makes or did you have to send him design specs?

Sorry, Al, but Fireball is already destined to go to another Forum member
(and Canadian!). I won't tell you which one, so my demise will not cause you
to break into his house!

Martin Bower is a professional model maker (he worked on SPACE: 1999,
among other things). He'd built this model for an anniversary special about
FIREBALL XL5, and thru a fellow Forum member (dammit, I have forgotten
who!) I found out about it, and contacted Martin to find out if it was for sale.
It was, and, since the main expense had already been paid, it was a pretty
reasonable price.

Breaking and entering isn't really a Canadian way to behave. I'd just go and
passive-aggressive him into giving it to me just to make me go away.

As someone who has been collecting "toys" for a long time, there is a layer
to this that goes beyond my nostalgia for FIREBALL XL5. This bring toy
collecting into the range of original art -- there is only one of this particular
model, and I'm the one who has it!

I know an art collector who operates like that.
