I wouldn't call Kirby's Superman handsome, in the classical sense, but I do
think he looks cool. I just like that figure, but I suppose I may be in the
minority. Still, that Kalibak looks dead-on, no?

BTW, I think the figure's face is close to the face shown at the top of Gerry
Turnbull's post. Not dead-on, but fairly close.

This talk of "Kirby's art style" being captured in these figures just makes me sad. Kirby's style could never be captured in an action figure. Oh, sure, the sculpture could incorporate the most superficial elements of how Kirby drew -- the stocky figures, the stylized musculature, the square jaws and flat fingertips -- but those are, if anything, the greatest weaknesses of Kirby's art. His true skill lay in the scope of his imagination and, most importantly, the sheer POWER of what he drew. The almost manic energy that seemed to be bursting from almost every panel.

That's not something that can be captured in static plastic.

DCD is doing an open ended line of figures based on George Perez's style:

I just don't see his style in any of those figures, though.

As we have seen with all the "Alex Ross" stuff that's in fact based on the
work of other, less commercial artists, there are collectors who will buy
product based on what they are told it is, rather than what it really
is. I picked up the "George Perez" Batman Black&White piece because I liked
the sculpt, not because I thought it looked like George's work. Quite
frankly, they could have sold it as a Jerry Ordway or a John Byrne Batman,
and used the same sculpt.

Altho, as some of you may recall, tho, a few years back I actually stopped
DC Direct from using my name on a Superman action figure that looked
nothing like my work -- that was, in fact, a random head stuck on a
recycled "Alex Ross" body!
