You're not hallucinating. Here's a Swan Superman next to a Ross Superman
(and notice which one looks a lot more superheroic and which one looks like
an angry old man)

I suspect the darker blue springs from the misconception that has come
increasingly to the fore since I joined the industry -- that Superman's
costume is "patriotic", that he, like Captain America, is "wearing the flag".
Which, of course, he isn't -- red, blue and yellow? -- but some have
tried to literalize this with the darker blue.

I always just guessed that it was some attempt to make him "darker",
therefore "cooler".

BTW, Mr. Byrne, I'm surprised that you didn't get the Kubert Hawkman, as
you have mentioned you love that helmet and rendition.

That's what I was thinking. The lighter blue looks so much better with the red, to me. The darker shade makes the red seem dull. Probably why Grant Morrison is so fired up to remove the red trunks, as he can't appreciate that on the Superman I think of, the one in light blue, the red is integral to the costume, breaking up the blue and setting off Superman's musculature.

Not to turn this into a stealth Superman's costume thread, but check out
how much more "Supermanesque" the Ross rendition looks with this "fixed".

Which is precisely why I didn't get this toy.

Great looking Kilowog Jesse!

And since you are taking requests... could I see a picture of your Alpha Flight cube?

Here you go ... I'm repainting the Sasquatch now, because after Kilowog, I know I can do better.   The colors are way flushed because of the camera flash.
