As a kid what i liked in the Marvel Team Up, Marvel Two in One and Brave & Bold books was that they were an easy way to learn about character whose adventures you can't follow (because you can just buy a limited number of books) So there was the place to meet the other ones and to explore the rest of the Marvel or Dc universe.

I picked up the first issue, but was underwhelmed.  Maybe I should give it another look.

I consider this an example of multi-layered storytelling, some get it , some don't,but it doesnt detract from the story.

••

I disagree. Multilayered storytelling means there are elements that will be understood by one part of the audience, but not necessarily another. In comics, this usually means stories in which more and more will become clear as a reader returns over the years, with more accumulated knowledge in tow. Stan Lee's writing on FANTASTIC FOUR, for instance, was peppered with all kinds of literary references that I did not get first pass, but understood later.

"Multilayered storytelling" shouldn't mean something that leaps of the page yelling HEY LOOK! A CUTE REFERENCE!! and yanks an aware reader right out of the story.

(And to save anyone the trouble of scouring thru everything I have ever written, I am sure I have been guilty of just this sort of thing. It took a while to learn the craft properly.)

I got the Binder reference, and thought it a cute mention in an extremely fun story.

The TV thing flew by me, but once it was pointed out, it just added more fun.

Batgirl's facial reactions are interesting... I know why I had a crush on Yvonne Craig when I was a little kid.

I didn't get either reference, until it was explained here.  However, what is the harm if the over 40 crowd are the ones "pulled out of the story" for a moment or two; after all THEY are the ones that love this stuff.  And the under 40 crowd (me) aren't harmed one way or another by it (e.g., Stan Lee's peppering of his stories with literary references).

I didn't get the referrence, and I used to watch the show when I was a lad.  I love the book, though.  It's amazing that George Perez can make Waid into such a good writer.  I'm not much of a Waid fan, but this book is GREAT!
