Oh, and to add to the great Gene Colan story:
I bought some artwork a few years ago from Erik Larsen. Normally, I received the stuff in two-three weeks but on this one occasion, it took a little longer and I got worried he never received the check. I emailed him and he apologized by explaining that he was swamped but that he'd try to get it out that week.
I got my artwork, on the box was his personal phone number. When I opened the box, I found one extra page from the Savage Dragon / Superman team-up. I hadn't actually ordered this and proceded to call him (I felt this took balls) to report the error to him.
So here I'm talking to Erik Larsen on the phone, thanking him for the great work and telling him about the extra page. Says Erik, "Oh, yeah. That's to make up for being so late getting the art to you."
I thanked him for the gesture and for the great work on SD and said that I didn't want to hold him longer from his work. I think he would have talked a little longer and regret not engaging him further but the fanboy in me cried "Hang up! He's gonna think you wanna blow him or something!"
Class act that Larsen dude. Frikking shame JB and Larsen have their differences.

A bit off-topic, but:
Those JB Dr. Strange pieces are literally out of this world. When I save up enough pennies and nickels, I think I'll ask for a Dr. Strange/Spider-Man piece. Sooner rather than later, I hope!

Golden's idea of "professionalism" differs quite a bit from that of the
average citizen, it appears. He shouldn't be surprised then that people
will attack it. His attempt at justification rings a little hollow to my ears.
Let's look at it another way, then, and leave all the other issues aside:
payment in advance, wait times, communication problems and let's even
take the "personalized message" off the commission and look at just the
drawing of Dr. Strange.
It sucks.
Wouldn't have been worth $50 even if it had been sketched out by Picasso
with a Bic pen.
Mr. Golden, you are capable of producing magnificent comic art, but you
have a very poor attitude. Good thing I don't have to know you in real
life.

Late reply here from me,but christ...really shocked over what Golden has done, I've always been a fan of his art. Such a shame that he has pulled this S*it!. Feel bad about all the guys who've been screwed over.
Oh, and Mr.Byrne, your great. Your work on Superman made me learn reading very fast when I was a kid.Can't wait for your and Mr.Stern JLA:Classified run.
And your actions here is pure class.

Just goes to show jerks are found in all walks of life. I am very disapointed
with how he feels it is ok to pocket $500 for a piece of work insulting the
very person who hired him and then doing the same to three others. All
because he was late on several promised deadlines, and refused to refund
money. If he had so much work to do, was unable to complete their
assignment he really should have refunded their money. Its a professional
thing to do. This whole situation just makes me very angry. I hate it when
someone has been unjustly wronged, and I hope that karma bites him
square in the ass.

I have a positive story to tell as well:
Way back in '96 I was on the rec.arts.comics.marvel.universe group, and
Silver Surfer colorist Tom Vincent had remarked that he was being taken
off of the book since the incoming writer had a colorist of his own that he
wanted on it. He was pretty bummed about it, and I couldn't
blame him for that. I remembered that he also colored the Thanos Quest
mini-series, done with airbrush no less, so I replied that it was a shame
to see this news, and that I thought he did an excellent job on that book,
particularly the effect he used on the Runner. This was done before
computer coloring became popular, mind you.
Tom replied to my personal email telling me that my reply made his day,
and as thanks he was sending me 2 original pages of his color work from
Thanos Quest, free of charge:
He airbrushed directly onto the board, and he sent me 2 of them, along
with overlays. I don't know what he's been up to these days, but I never
forgot his extremely generous gesture.
