Does anyone know Shooters reasons for (as I understand it) ordering the removal of DeFalco and Frenz from Amazing Spider-Man?

It was not Shooter. It was Jim Owlsley (Christopher Priest). Defalco and Frenz had been late a few times. Owlsley wanted to create a new book for them. But there was some bad blood over them being removed from Amazing. This is all on Priest wensite. In his essay "Why I never talk about Spider-Man."

Jim Owlsley and Christopher Priest are the same person. I never knew that. I must be living under a rock or something.

OK, I guess I have to dissent a bit.

Walt Simonson's run on Thor channeled Kirby, almost unavoidably. But it did so without being totally derivative. Frenz's Thor was, to my eyes, totally derivative. A copy. An imitation. (And DeFalco was essentially copying Stan Lee. And not doing a great job of it.)

It's one thing to be inspired by that which came before, and another thing to simply copy it.

That much I knew, but some online sources suggest that Owlsley was acting under orders from Jim Shooter. Anyway thanks for filling in some of the details for me there.

I really liked the DeFalco/Frenz run on Thor good fun superhero/sci-fi/fantasy stories.

All I ask for in my comics.

I think Frenz had a real Buscema-look to his work on this run.

I loved those issues of Thor when I bought them and still do! Great comics! Ron did an issue of the Silver Surfer too that really rocked...I think Sinnott inked it as well.

When Frenz and Brett Breeding were doing Thor, I really liked that run together.  You could definately see a bit of a couple artists in his style, little bit of Kirby, little bit of Buscema, little bit his own.  All in all, I enjoyed it all.  Though, once Sinnott begun to ink Frenz's work, then you could see where the inker, influenced, the penciller.  Ron's style shifted heavilly towards Kirby's style (which isn't a bad thing, but he did begin to lose a bit of his "own style").

But all in all, for me, no matter how good Ron Frenz did with Thor, it just didn't have the special place for me in my heart with Thor....that was already taken by Walt Simonson's run.  heh.  Still, was a good time for the most part n comics...not only did you have some great comics coming out with Thor, but you also had, IMHO, the last great Buscema & Palmer run with Avengers.

For any of you folks that were looking at my Frenz gallery, I added another Thor page to it. This one features Annihulus.
