Thought JB and others would enjoy info and a review of a book on the history of Canadian superhero comics.

And the blood pressure remark? As you can see in the link, the guys titles his review: "POW! BLAM! ZOWIE! eh?"

<sigh>

a book on the history of Canadian superhero comics.

******

I'm reminded of the leaflet on Famous Jewish Sports Legends from Airplane.

Canada had quite the booming comicbook industry during World War 2, when there was a embargo on the importating of foriegn publications. It dried up and blew away as soon as the "real" comics came back after the War, but there's considerably more there than a "leaflet".

Despite the somewhat condescending tone of this review, the book itself sounds really interesting to me - and I have no connection to Canada at all, other than visiting British Columbia on my honeymoon.

Those WWII Canadian superheroes sound like a lot of fun - Johnny Canuck, Northern Light, Nelvana, Captain Canada. Someone should reprint some of those stories, as I'd love to read them.

And, of course, Nelvana is Snowbird's mother!

Seek out a book called "The Great Canadian Whites"
for some reprints, at least partial. But prepare for
some fairly sweeping disappointments. It
sometimes really does seem that getting
superheroes right requires selling your soul to Uncle
Sam.

BTW, I took care of my blood pressue by sending this email to the editor:

What a brilliantly original title for Jeet Heer's review of John Bell's book on Canadian comicbooks. I am frankly stunned that no-one has ever before used such a clever and innovative title!

Bravo!

JB,

I'm sure your sarcasm will be lost on them.  Interesting to see if you get a response.

Thanks, JB. I'll look around for that book - although it sounds like these comics perhaps weren't as enjoyable as their names would indicate.

But I've always liked stories set in WWII, either those comics actually produced in the '40s or later books like the Invaders or All-Star Squadron set during that era. Something about seeing a superhero giving Adolph Hitler a sock to the jaw just sounds cool to me.
