That's probably the coolest image of the black costume ever created.
***
Makes me realize how freakin' COOL that costume really could've been.

I really want to agree with you, and as much as I love the cover...it's the white soles that irk me.

That black & white SPIDER-MAN cover is almost mesmerizing. *** Oh, how I fought for that cover! First, by definining Spider-Man's outline strictly with negative space, it broke Shooter's black-on-black embargo. Then, the colorist wanted to fill up the windows with yellow and blue and maybe some red over here. The garishly colored logo, I maintain to this day, is both camps having their "revenge". (That cover is also one of the very few instances of me doing "crossword puzzle" buildings -- deliberately. I needed to maximize that negative space!)

...it's the white soles that irk me.*** Unfortunately, the image wouldn't work without them. I know! I tried a lot of different poses.

I totally get that...I recall spending a little time trying to think of a better psition for the legs but it boiled down to losing the lovely fluid movement inherant in the pose as we see it just to get the whole black sillhouette.
I think the -real- trouble leg was the camera left one (the bent one). The leading leg would probably be fine all lack...still, it's like trying to over polish a diamond...

The "Alpha Flight" #3 cover, and the "Spectacular Spider-Man" #3 cover are both among my favorites of JB's covers.
I also like a lot of the original "Uncanny X-Men" covers that Marvel keeps ripping off every time you turn around.

I wasn't a big fan Black-Suit Spider-Man. The design was very cool, but it just seemed too "dark" for our Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. That said, that Spectacular Spider-Man cover still ranks up there as one of my all time favorite covers.
A question for you, JB: If you were asked to re-imagine or re-create that cover today, do you think you'd use the pens you're favoring today, or would you break out the old brush and bottle of ink?

There's a part of me that would want to see JB do a black-costumed Spider-Man as a commission.

Re: AF#11 Cover-
Ha! I remember seeing that on the stands and thinking that was the X-Men he was facing for a moment. I thought Box and Jaxon were Colossus and Professor X.
