thanks, to Amazon, I rarely get inside a bookstore anymore. But last weekend I needed some gift cards, so I ventured into Borders (it had been nearly a year since my last visit). They had a spinner rack full of comics in the newspapers & magazines section, but the trades were gone. On the other side of the store I found 1 shelf of trades (pretty cool) and THREE shelves (these are big shelves, mind you) of Japanese art/Manga.

sigh

YOSHITOSHI???

That's my favorite ukiyo-e (print) artist!

Did you notice the Frank Miller connection, John?

He's amazing. I'm just awestruck they were done with woodblock prints.

Yeah, I can see the influence he had on Miller and Ronin.

I strongly suspect the trades are still there. Just relocated.

My Borders has an immense Manga section as well as a TPB collection.

Yeah, John, that's why I said this in my third sentence: On the other side of the store I found 1 shelf of trades (pretty cool) and THREE shelves (these are big shelves, mind you) of Japanese art/Manga. ;)

John--

What time did you go to the Cartoon Art Museum? I was working the front desk from 11am to 1:30pm yesterday--and I curated the permanent collection exhibition with all of those adventure strips that you mentioned.

Whoah! I was there from 1-1:30. I was the man with his son who were in the book portion browsing for a while. There was a slender guy with brown hair working the front and an Asian man working the store.

Actually, looking at your avatar, it resembles the man working the front desk, so I'm guessing he was you?

That was me. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your visit!

I'll be teaching a manga drawing workshop with my wife at the Asian Art Museum on Thursday, and really looking forward to seeing all of that Tezuka art on display. San Francisco's a great place to be a comics fan.

My son would love to take a class from you and your wife. He's not much for drawing, but he was very interested in the Tezuka show and he would've bought the How to Draw Manga books at your gallery if he had enough in his wallet.

Be sure to see the Yoshitoshi stuff if you haven't already. Wow.

Btw, I'm in Newark. Are you a gamer, Andrew?

I've got some friends who are gamers, but I never really got into it.

Thanks for the tip about the Yoshitoshi art. If I don't get to see much of the museum tonight, I'll probably make a return trip this weekend (and probably the next several weekends after that).

Our workshop tonight is a 15-minute workshop on drawing faces and expressions. We've done some longer ones at various libraries and schools throughout the area, and our next scheduled one is a two-hour class at the Charles Schulz Museum in October.
