Showcase Presents Enemy Ace and Blade of the Immortal Volume 18
arrived today. It's been a near 6-month wait for these two books.
Nice to have them in hand.
Anyone else following Blade of the Immortal?
The current volume contains gorgeous artwork as usual, a hefty chunk of
action, and the lead brawler, Manji, is still confined and
undergoing,...experiments.
There's an online site that has summaries of yet-to-be translated and
published BotI stories. It's a taking a lot of my willpower to stay away
from that site!!!
Interesting to note Dark Horse Comics has ceased publishing the
individual comic issues and will only reprint the series in TPB format.
Seems the collection will come out more frequently too. Thank
goodness.

I'm reading a lot of good stuff, in this moment.
In Italy we have a TARZAN reprint featuring the classics by Foster and Hogart, a complete Carl Barks collection sold with an important newspaper, the complete reprint of the SMURFS by Peyo and several other good things. It's a good moment if you read comics here.
What's really odd is that, among these great things, the comic book I can't wait to read every month is a manga: SAINT SEIYA. Oh, I know it's not as good as those I mentioned before. DAGO is better. TARZAN is better. GREEN LANTERN is better. But, really, I'm loving SAINT SEIYA. Don't ask...! I'm not sure about the answer.

BotI and Enemy Ace came on Tuesday! I had a grand time soaking in the new Blade of the Immortal volume. Finished reading it, but made sure to pace myself so the experience could be sustained.
Here are some snapshots of the gorgeous interior art - chapter pages for the Barefoot story arc
Doa (the girl with the facial tattoo), has a large partner. He's a son of a Christian missionary. They work as an effective fighting duo. He is the foundation for her assaults - stopping all incoming attacks with his large frame and armor while Doa zips in and out of his legs and leaps high over his shoulders to lay down the wicked attacks.
Here Doa almost loses her head (you can see the blade cut deep into her funky disco-ish styled hat), but a quick strike to her opponent (not seen until the following page) ensures her survival.
This little chick is wicked:
BotI is the best action/adventure comic out nowadays. I can't speak more highly than that. Truly beautiful amazing stuff. Dark Horse Comics has announced they've stopped publishing the invididual comic issues. They'll just focus on producing the TPB collections. Appears these collections will be coming out more frequently - the next one is due in June!!![/quote]

I have a question...
Most all the Manga I see are English translation republications of stuff done in Japan months or years earlier. My understanding is that Shonen Jump, Dark Horse, and so forth kind of filter through the massive Japanese market looking for successful mangas that would translate for American tastes*.
So how is the initial publishing done in Japan? Are they published there in anthologies, digests, or comic-style books? Is it usually on a monthly schedule, or just published as completed? What's the cost in yen.. are they relatively more or less expensive than in the U.S?
I don't mind the decompression in manga, but I think that's because I'm probably reading years' worth of stories in one sitting.
*I originally wrote "translate for American testes", which is not what I meant, but kind of still works.

In Japan, manga is published in large phonebook sized anthologies that run either monthly or weekly in a few cases. These anthologies are B&W on cheap paper, which allows them to be affordable to the masses. Collected editions of successful series are printed on better paper. Manga is a lot more affordable as a hobby in Japan than comics are in America.
There is a Batman animated film in the works that has six different Japanese directors and studios doing short animated films written by American comics and animation veterans. It will be out this summer.

As far as I know Mangas are published mostly as monthly anthologies which can contain several 100 pages, printed in cheap quality on cheap paper. The yusually get thrown away after reading and only cost a few dollars (I would say between 2$ and 10$). There are, of course, later collections of the storys in better quality.
There probably are, like in the US, exceptions.

Keith, I've been reading the weeklies as they come out for a while and the decompression can be really gratuitious. Sometimes the tv adaptations like Keroro Gunso are miles away better than the source material and can feature alot more content.
Naruto had more story to it in the first chapters, they roll along really well. It's still good, but I'm not crazy about the current fight. And stuff like Bleach is just really tedious though it looks hot consistantly week after week. I read Gantz too, it tends to move fast.

Just bumping this to reccomend Liar Game by Kaitani Shinobu. An ex-con man fresh out of jail slowly gets himself involved in a black market lying game. It's one of those characters trapped in a "game" mangas kind of like Gantz. Except it's all psychological suspense. The art is really good, clean and not very cartoony, I love it.
Like most manga, you can probably read a few chapters already just googling it.

++++++++++++++++++
Not only is it true, Ari, but Kevin Conroy is going to be doing Batman's voice for at least part of it! Its called Batman: Gotham Knight.
The movie is supposed to be an anthology made up of about 6 different stories, each by different animators. Sort of like The Animatrix. 3 of the villains are Scarecrow, Deadshot and Killer Croc. Deadshot's design looks pretty good, but Killer Croc looks like crap.
