Great issue! The recognition of Octavius's brilliance, Reed's handling of Octavius and the Spider-Man billboard triggering him into full Dr Octopus mode (giving us a wonderful Mr Fantastic Dr Octpus fight) and then ending on that sad note of a failed mission. Wow!
And, Gerry, don't believe I saw that thread of yours at the time... so allow me to offer a wee bit belated condolances to you and yours.

Outstanding and sad issue all at once. I still get choked up
every time I read the last panel. And Gerry, I'm thinking about
you all over again. My best to you and your wife.

JB,
did this story write itself or did you plan it out?
to me, it all feels and reads so real, the minimal-istic content that speak volumes in this book is simply amazing...

Frustrating to look back on this period. There was still so far to go in terms of handling drapery -- plus the figures themselves are off somehow. Too long in the torso, too narrow in the shoulders.Odd thing about the mail on this one was the number of letters from readers assuming the death of Reed and Sue's baby was a last minute decision. Perhaps their thinking was informed by what was by then becoming known about the genesis of X-MEN 137, but it struck me as odd that anyone would think I would invest so much time in the story only to "change course" at the last moment.

One of my favorite issues of JB's run on the F.F. I had no idea that the Sue would lose the baby. It was shocking and sad at the same time. I was mad. Not at JB but the fact that they could go through all that and end up with the loss. It just showed me just how much JB made me love these characters during his run. Yes, they are just comic book heroes but I love them nonetheless. Great issue.

I remember reading this for the first time as a teenager. The ending hit me pretty hard even then. Now that I'm a father, it's even more heart-wrenching.
And Gerry, I also missed that thread last year. So let me offer my condolences and prayers to you and your family.

A great issue. Also, it was interesting seeing Mr. Fantastic against Doc Ock. A precedent to "put him against someone he does not knos how to defeat by experience"....

but did you, at any moment, consider going ahead with Sue having the baby?.
Just imagine what Marvel could now be doing with her/him had s/he been born...shudder

I remember the first time I read this it was like being punched in the stomach it was so shocking. I have to admit...comics were better when they were surprises.

Intended surprises are usually better when they are actually coming out as surprises.
It's like with some film critics who sometimes reveal spoilers or at the very least offer something up like, "well the surprise ending is a good twist" which obviously puts you in a certain frame of mind when watching the film (or reading book, comic, whatever). (An aside: I still think the most surprising ending M. Night Shyamalan could have in any upcoming film of his, would be a standard, Hollywood ending. Nobody would see that one coming, while they wait for the twist)

Still moistens the eyes.
That last page is brilliant, cruel and starkly moving.
Bravo, JB.
