The heroes are no more "random" than any group of heroes. It's up to the creative team to GIVE them commonality. Nostalgia for the X-Men clouds the mind...the original team didn't last because they didn't have external storylines outside of Xavier's school. Not a problem with the Champions. The New X-Men had those subplots and Claremont kept the melodrama going, but let's not forget that it took YEARS of that "layering" before those X-Men achieved individual popularity based on their own stories as well as the ongoing series' stories.
There's infinitely MORE subplots and storylines to the Champions, as with any character or group of characters. Growth of character and character interaction will always result if the creators know what they're doing, and the Champions are just as ripe for that layering and definition as the X-Men. Moreso.

I have a fondness for The Champions myself. It's a horrible book to reread, but I loved them as a kid. The commission is top notch. My only complaint is the Vanisher aka unkown shadowy figure, should be hiding mysteriously in the back to make it perfect.

Nice piece JB love the Ghost Rider especially. Nice to see Black Goliath I agree that he would have been a natural for the Champions.
Wayne do you have your art collection online anywhere?

I think I have a new favourite commision. I LOVE The Champions. I picked up the two classics trades the otehr week even though I already own all the single issues. Worth it just for those few issues of Byrne art.
My favourite bit of the picture is seeing Darkstar again (RIP).

Two mutants, an ex-spy, a Greek god and a demon? Yup, only in comics!

Hercules tearing that Sentinel apart is Awesome. Shredding it like the paper it's drawn on.

Awesome work, JB!
I like The Champions quite a bit, particularly Black Goliath. It'd be cool to see them revived, but they would need a lot of work.

...what exactly is the point of this team? To stick a bunch of random heroes together?*** Originally, at least in-office, the book was described as "everybody who isn't already in a group."

Nostalgia for the X-Men clouds the mind...the original team didn't last because they didn't have external storylines outside of Xavier's school.*** In point of fact, it was that which gave the X-Men the 66 issues -- bimonthly! -- they originally lasted. The title spoke directly to the alienation felt by many fans. Just, in those days, not enough. ("Not enough" being defined as "sales Joe Quesade would sell his right arm to get today".)

…the Vanisher aka unkown shadowy figure…*** Ah, yes. The most absurd attempt at a "mystery villain" since the Titanium Man was "hidden in shadows" in IRON MAN.
