One thing that bothers me is the artists who insist on making the cape so long that it looks as if it would get in the way of all of Batman's movement
DC should not have allowed Neal Adams to get away with this way back than. Thanks, Neal!

I wasn't talking about Adams. He drew it so that it worked. There were a few, much later on, who had capes flowing all over panels in ridiculous ways.

Have you actually read the issues Neal Adams did? Or how about the Walt Simonson Detective issues? Denys Cowan? Marshall Rogers? Kelley Jones? Frank Miller?

I've always liked JB's Batman. That's definitely my favorite of all the commissions.

With the exception of Denys Cowan, I've read Batman issues by all of those. In fact, Adams would be one of my favorite Batman artists, with Simonson and Rogers not far behind. I wasn't trying to slam any particular artist. There have indeed been times when Batman's cape appeared too cumbersome, in my opinion, for him to adequately move in the ways he must. But my cape comment was mostly meant as a compliment towards this particular image by JB. Thtat's all it was.

So you felt the need to compliment someone by cutting other people down. You are a class act.

Abe,
Did I mention the name of any other artist in my post? No.
I tried to say something nice about this particular depiction of Batman. I was stating a personal preference about how I like to see the cape drawn, with this commission being an example of that type of drawing. Implying that I was trying to launch some kind of personal attack on any other particular artists is absurd. You are reading far too much into my comment. That's all I have to say about that.

Great job!
What I love about Byrne's Batman is how he can draw the character from any period of time. Also, he's one of the few artists who can get away with making Batman "fun", yet also display the grim side of the character. Neal Adams often showed a human side to Batman in his expressions and I think that's something most modern artists neglect. If he's all dark and gritty then the human contrast that makes the character so interesting is missing.

JB, what is your take on the utility belt? I love the original tube-style that you've done above, but lately it seems every character has a waist belt of pouches and sacks, even the previously alive Captain America. As useless as the oval?
